This week’s battle challenge focuses on the Soul Strangler.

Card Details

A Chaos Legion rare level monster from the Death unit at level 3:

  • Estimated cost: $1.593

  • Range attack: 3

  • Speed: 2

  • Health: 2

The Soul Strangler reminds me of an old-school Disney villain. Those old-school over-the-top villains when Disney still produced top-quality animation were the days! All credit to the creative team at splinterlands, the Soul Strangler design is fantastic, and it does look like it's about to sneak attack and strangle your soul. How does it match up against other monsters in terms of status? Well, it's a low-mana cap monster with average speed and health but has very healthy range damage at level 3. It can prove an advantageous range monster in those low-mana cap battles or rulesets like Lost Legendaries and Little League.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

This was a reasonably straightforward battle on the balance of play, but I still had difficulties getting this victory over the line. My opposition decided to stack range and magic monsters and, notably, play a level 2 legendary in Doctor Blight. Doctor Blight has been my undoing in many battles of late, and I don't have it in my gallery as the cost is too much for me. Nonetheless, I opted for a blended mix of front-loading with melee and no attack monsters and then a backline trio of range and magic monsters doing most of the damage. The Soul Strangler was the shining star in this battle and was responsible for eviscerating the opposition while the rest were ably supporting it.

Do you like the Soul Strangler? Why or why not?

Let's summarise what you are getting with the Soul Stranger. A helpful low-mana cap monster with good range damage can hold its on in certain rulesets or low-mana cap battles that cost less than a cup of Starbucks coffee. When you pair it with its fellow Death unit compatriot, Weirding Warrior (another low-mana cap monster), you get a good amount of range damage for five mana. That's good value and one card to add to the collection.
