This week's battle challenge focuses on the Sea Monster:

There are rumors of Sea Monsters that can swallow a ship whole. The truth is, there are Sea Monsters big enough to swallow the Sea Monster that swallowed the ship whole. Most land lubbers cannot conceive how deep within the planet or how far beyond the horizon the oceans go.

Card

A Reward common rarity monster from the Water Splinter at level 7:

  • Estimated cost: $6.05

  • Mana cost: 8

  • Melee attack: 5

  • Speed: 3

  • Health: 9

  • Heal ability: Restores a portion of the monster's health each round

  • Thorns ability: When hit with a melee attack, does damage back to the attacker

The Sea Monster is a great melee damage tank card with high health, great damage and healing. A Reward monster card that has been out of print for a while now, but is still a powerful melee monster card that all players, new and old, should be looking to level up. I have the Sea Monster levelled up to 7, which unlocks the thorns ability (an amazing ability!). Some say he is the cheaper alternative to the legendary Hydra monster card ($27 for a level 2 Hydra).

Battle - Full Battle Replay

Battle Details

  • Mana cap: 12

  • Ruleset(s): Reverse Speed, Broken Arrows

Lineup Details

  • Summoner: Daria Dragonscale - +1 melee damage to all friendly monsters

  • Furious Chicken - decoy monster in first position to absorb the first hit from the enemy's melee monster in position 1

  • Sea Monster - primary melee damage tank

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

No No No - ha! It seems that my opponent and I had the same idea and he won this time around by having a maxed out Sea Monster. My initial strategy going into battle was to have the Furious Chicken to be the decoy and die, but more importantly to absorb the first melee damage from the enemy's monster in position. Alas, my opponent had the same thought. What this battle did showcase was how powerful the Sea Monster is at various levels. At maxed level, the Sea Monster did no more damage than my Sea Monster, but more importantly, it has 3 more health, which is vital. Coupled with the self-heal after each round, the enemy's Sea Monster could outlast and eliminate my Sea Monster.

Do you like the Sea Monster? Why or why not?

What is there not to like about the Sea Monster? High damage, high health melee damage tank with healing and thorns. It's relatively cheap when you compare it to other monsters on the market. I would recommend this card to all new players to Splinterlands and recommend that you work towards levelling it up to level; 6 which unlocks thorns ability. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the legendary Hydra, the Sea Monster may be that alternative for you.
