Rise of the Commons Ruleset Battle Mage Secrets | Splinterlands #307
This week’s battle mage secrets on the Rise of the Commons Ruleset.
Ruleset Details
In the Rise of the Commons ruleset in Splinterlands, only common and rare units are allowed to participate, while summoner cards remain unaffected by this limitation. This means that you must build your entire team using common and rare cards, excluding epic and legendary monsters. Something that took me a while to learn about in splinterlands is that legendary cards may appear stronger at first glance because they have fewer levels to progress through, leading to more noticeable power jumps. However, common cards have a more gradual growth curve, making their strength less apparent but still competitive. There are some very powerful common and rare monsters (e.g. Cerberus) and some become even more powerful when they synergize with other monsters (e.g. Crustacean King + Pirate Captain).

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?
This battle was incredibly close until the very end. In the end, I emerged as the winner. I have to thank the boosts in armor and melee damage that greatly supported our efforts and secured the victory. The combination of three rulesets during this battle was like a dream come true. It allowed us to exclusively use melee monsters and them being able to attack from any position. While my opponent chose a couple of high mana cap monsters I opted for low to medium mana cost cards focusing on acquiring armor and melee damage buffs to take advantage of the restrictive rulesets. Speed played a role in this battle as my opponent Coastal Sentry evaded attacks from all directions. A few more successful evasions and the outcome of the battle might have favored them. Despite my opponent dealing more damage and having higher health monsters with armor; me having Armorsmith, on my team constantly repairing armor every round through its Repair ability ultimately secured my victory.
Do You Like the Rise of the Commons Ruleset? Why or Why Not?
Since playing splinterlands I have tried to have a decent-leveled collection that can be played at Gold/Diamond leagues and therefore I love rulesets that put the spotlight on often-underutilized cards like commons and rare cards. As I mentioned above, if you have spent time and money into levelling up common and rare monsters, the gradual progression can pay off in battles. Even one additional attack damage can be the difference between victory and loss. Another thing I appreciate about the ruleset is that its simple -> exclusion of epic and legendary monsters and no other modifications. Also, more seasoned players or players with large collections can still utilized those overpowered legendary summoners (e.g. Yodin Zaku, Byzantine Kitty) but that’s par for the course.
