This week's battle mage secrets focuses on the Rise of the Common Ruleset.

Ruleset Details

The Rise of the Commons ruleset limits players to using only common and rare units and mitigates any advantage by playing epic and legendary cards. Importantly, legendary summoners are excluded from this limitation, which is something many new players often forget about. An often overlooked approach is determining how the opposition will defend in this ruleset. Will they use strategies like Magic Reflect, Return Fire or Amplify? Asking yourself these kinds of questions may take a few seconds before the battle, but it can be the difference between a loss or victory. Depending on the battle will determine whether your approach is to debuff certain types of damage or implement taunt strategies.

Battle -- Full Battle History

Battle Details

  • Mana Cap: 41

  • Ruleset(s): Up Close & Personal, Rise of the Common, Tis But Scratches

Line-up Details

  • Possibilus the Wise (summoner): +2 health, and Trample and Reach ability to all friendly monsters.

  • Diemonshark: primary melee tank with high armor and health.

  • Coastal Sentry: primary DPS melee damage dealer who can attack from position 2 thanks to Possibilus the Wise Reach ability buff.

  • Disintegrator + Demented Shark: support melee damage + melee damage buff/debuffs.

  • Hardy Stonefish + Battering Ram: backline fodder monsters for Sneak/Opportunity bait.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

The following battle perfectly showcases how pairing common and rare monsters with a legendary summoner, can elevate the common and rare monsters to another level. With Possibilus the Wise, all friendly monsters get +2 health, and the Reach and Trample ability. The Reach ability is great because as melee monsters move up, they get the ability to attack from position two. Therefore, the legendary summoner synergizes well in a melee-only battle. The real MVP of the battle was Coastal Sentry with its Double Strike ability was doing 8-10 melee damage per round. Even though the opposition made a good go at the battle with its legendary summoner and triple Sneak/opportunity monsters, Coastal Sentry was just too much for it - not bad for a common monster!

Do You Like the Rise of the Common Ruleset? Why or Why Not?

Rulesets like Rise of the Common are great at giving a chance for some of the underappreciated common and rare cards to feature, which often is underutilized due to players' (new and old) over-reliance on legendary and epic monsters. Another thing I like about this ruleset is the opportunity for discovery -- finding new common and rare cards that I don't use often and experimenting with them in battles. Seems like a win-win, because even if you lose then you will know whether you have discovered a new card to utilize in other battles. Your mileage may vary but this ruleset also allows you to flex with some of my favorite common and rare cards like Coastal Sentry, Diemonshark, Flying Squid, and Flame Monkey to name a few.
