This week's battle mage secrets on the Odd Ones Out Ruleset.

Ruleset Details

In the Odd Ones Out ruleset, only monsters with odd mana costs are allowed in battles, excluding summoners. The strategies and approaches in the other restrictive ruleset, Even Stevens, as many strategies apply to both rulesets. At the core of the Odd Ones Out ruleset lies in focusing on monsters with three and five mana costs. Monsters in this mana range cost are abundant and offer very good utility and versatility. Some of my favorites in this mana cost range are; Crustacean King, Divine Healer, Soul Strangler, Silent Sha-Vi, Air Elemental, Javelin Thrower, and Haunted Spirit to name a few.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

In this battle, we have two restrictive rulesets with only odd mana cards and only magic monsters able to be played in battle. I wanted to play this battle on my alt account to showcase how some of the restrictive rulesets can play out. With a mana cap of 25, I was only able to hit 23 out of the 25 mana cap point limit, so not too bad. Now we must remember, that the restrictive rulesets can work in your favor, and in this battle, it did that as my opposition only deployed two monsters. The difference maker was having Divine Healer in the backline and with its Tank Heal ability kept Iziar alive while the opposition's Iziar health was slowly being chipped away.

Do You Like the Odd Ones Out Ruleset? Why or Why Not?

Restrictive rulesets can result in a loss before the battle even begins. I have been in 99 mana cost battles where you have one or two restrictive rulesets and do not have a large enough collection to rely on and therefore you are nowhere near the 99 mana cost cap. It's like playing an RPG and going into battle with a level one warrior against a level 10 creep – you stand no chance. Whether you like the Odd Ones Out ruleset largely depends on your perspective and the size of your collection. Remember that Odd Ones Out is one of the 44 total rulesets in the game, and it can appear in roughly 2-2.25% of battles, so being equipped to handle it is beneficial. In such cases, it might be worth investing in some strong odd mana monsters to ensure you're prepared for this ruleset when it appears.
