This week’s battle mage secrets on the Keep Your Distance Ruleset.

Ruleset Details

The Keep Your Distance ruleset in splinterlands restricts the use of any melee attackers. This implies that monsters with melee attacks are completely banned from participating in battles under this ruleset. Instead, players must rely on units with ranged attacks, magic attacks, or non-attacking buff/debuff cards. As there are only two types of attacks available - magic and ranged - assembling a well-balanced team becomes crucial. The presence of Magic Reflect, a common ability in this ruleset, makes it essential to choose tanks with high Health or the Void ability to withstand reflected damage. Due to his Magic Reflect and low mana cost, the OG Lord Arianthus has always been a popular choice in this ruleset.

Battle Details

  • Mana cap: 28

  • Rulesets(s): Weak Magic, Back To Basics, Keep Your Distance

Lineup Details

  • Tyrus Paladium (Summoner): +1 armor to all friendly monsters.

  • Venari Crystalsmith + Evelyn Auvera: silly mistake from me as I had these two monsters swapped around incorrectly which didn't help me at all!

  • Defender of Truth: primary magic damage with extra armor to improve its survivability.

  • Highland Archer + Air Elemental + Peacebringer: a trio of primary range damage.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

The rulesets in splinterlands lend the game a roguelike capability, making each battle different and random, which adds to its challenging nature. In this battle, we encountered a trio of rulesets - Keep Your Distance, Back to Basics, and Weak Magic. These rules hindered our options in battle. We were unable to utilize melee monsters, and the effectiveness of magic monsters was nullified, with the damage they dealt first hitting armor rather than health, and all monster abilities being removed. With limited options and having to rely on lower-level monsters due to a smaller collection, we didn’t have much hope. Our opponent, being stronger and faster, easily overpowered us with little effort.

Do you like the Keep Your Distance ruleset? Why or why not?

It's becoming cliched but as I do these posts weekly, it goes without saying, I have mixed feelings about the Keep Your Distance ruleset. Negating the use of a specific type of cards, such as melee attackers, can be quite restrictive, as it requires a large collection to compensate effectively. No Attack Tanks play a crucial role in battles, and in this ruleset, selecting the right tank becomes even more critical as they must counter magic and ranged attacks effectively. It can be frustrating when a carefully planned team falls apart due to a suboptimal tank choice. Despite the challenges, I've also learned to be cautious about opponents using Blast attacks, which can be particularly devastating in this ruleset.
