Fog of War Weekly Battle Challenge | Splinterlands #279
This week’s battle challenge focuses on the Fog of War Ruleset.
Ruleset Details
The Fog of War ruleset primary effect is the removal of the Sneak and Snipe abilities from monsters. Notably, tanks become more vulnerable, attracting the focus of enemy monsters (except those with the Opportunity ability). Safeguarding your tank necessitates the implementation of various tactics, such as healing, debuffs, Shield, and Repair. By employing these strategies effectively, you can effectively counter the enemy's concentrated attacks. It's important to mention that while the Sneak and Snipe abilities are disabled in the Fog of War ruleset, monsters possessing these abilities can still be utilized. However, without these abilities, their effectiveness diminishes significantly. Instead, the Opportunity ability takes centre stage in this ruleset. Monsters equipped with Opportunity target the weakest enemy based on health, allowing you to eliminate powerful magic and ranged attackers before they can strike. Another vital strategy in Fog of War revolves around leveraging the Reach and Blast abilities. Reach enables monsters to attack from the second row, making it advantageous to include a Reach monster in your lineup. By including one or two monsters with Blast in your team, you can neutralize enemy monsters before they inflict significant damage.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?
The battle rulesets, Fog of War and Melee Mayhem, present contrasting dynamics. While Fog of War removes Sneak and Snipe abilities, Melee Mayhem grants melee monsters the ability to attack from any position. Despite being aware of the risks, I decided to deploy the high-mana Possibilus the Wise summoner. Its additional health buff, Reach, and Trample abilities were intended to be my winning combination. However, I was taken aback when my opponent strategically deployed Mylor Crowling, whose Thorns ability became the deciding factor. As the battle screen loaded, I realized I was beat. Despite my good efforts, the Thorns ability dismantled my lineup. I can't help but berate myself for not acquiring Mylor Crowling when it was initially released, as I deemed it too costly. Oh, how I regret that decision now!
Do you like the Fog of War ruleset? Why or why not?
The absence of Sneak and Snipe abilities might render certain monsters less effective, thereby limiting viable options for team composition. I admit that often I am reliant on heavy hitting melee Sneak monsters (e.g. Sand Worm) who can do massive damage from the backline so when Fog of War ruleset is one of the battle ruleset, I do need to adjust my playstyle and reassess battle strategy. At least those monsters aren’t excluded but playing monsters who have lost their Sneak and Snipe abilities is limiting – its like buying a high-end gaming PC and only playing games from our childhood. Don’t get me wrong, those games are awesome, you just don’t need fancy hardware to play them. Anyways I digress, Fog of War ruleset further reinforces why you need a well rounded splinterlands collection because in this ruleset monsters with Opportunity become critical, as well as Blast and Reach monsters.
