This week’s battle challenge focuses on the Broken Arrows Ruleset.

Ruleset Details

The Broken Arrow ruleset prevents all range monsters from being selected for a battle. The Broken Arrows ruleset can make the team-building process much more difficult. The typical strategy people tend to employ is over-emphasizing the use of magic monsters. However, this can be countered with the Magic Reflect ability, so relying heavily on magic monsters can be detrimental. Don’t get me wrong, having a backline of magic monsters hitting under armor will always have its place in battle; however, you want to ensure you don’t go all in on magic monsters. Melee monsters with Opportunity, or Sneak abilities, can be extraordinary to utilize as it will allow melee monsters to attack from the backline.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

Back to Basics, Broken Arrows, and Equalizer rulesets were the rulesets for this battle – an interesting combination. My defacto approach with the Equalizer ruleset is to allow the opposition to provide the high base health, allowing me to focus on packing my lineup with as many monsters as possible within the low mana cap constraints. This played out exactly like I had hoped. My opposition opted to stack the backline with magic damage and play Djinn Oshannus, a magic tank monster with 11 base health, and due to the Equalizer ruleset, all monsters got this base health. The battle lasted 21 rounds and even had the fatigue feature proc (i.e., -1 damage per round per monster after a certain number of rounds). This battle was a test of patience and ultimately came down to who will outlast each other and hope the RNG gods were in their favor and no misses were procced. RNG gods blessed me with their presence, and I clinched victory in the end.

Do you like the Broken Arrows ruleset? Why or why not?

Whenever a ruleset removes a particular set of monsters, it will always be challenging. Many players tend to have range monsters, which are plentiful and slightly cheaper than magic monsters. Therefore, naturally, players will find this ruleset frustrating or excited by the challenge of strategically picking their lineup with this constraint. As I have mentioned above, an over-reliance on magic monsters can be detrimental, as this can be countered with the Magic Reflect ability. So this ruleset does require you to have a plan and mix it up depending on the combination of the Rulesets that splinterlands tends to throw at you!
