This week's battle challenge focuses on the Animated Corpse:

Card Details

An alpha/beta edition common rarity monster from the Death Splinter at level 5:

  • Estimated cost: ~$53

  • Mana cost: 4

  • Melee damage: 2

  • Speed: 3

  • Health: 7

  • Void ability: Reduced damage from Magic attacks.

Whenever I look at the Animated Corpse artwork, it reminds me of the undead pirate LeChuck (from the classic LucasArts game The Curse of Monkey Island) and a zombie from The Walking Dead show. Maybe it's a bit of a stretch to see the similarities between the Animated Corpse and LeChuck. Nonetheless, I have always seen it as a backup to the Haunted Spirit with the Animated Corpse. Whenever I cannot play Haunted Spirit, then Animated Corpse gets revived from the grave and gets a chance to kick butt!

Battle - Full Battle Replay

Battle Details

  • Mana cap: 23

  • Rulesets(s): Healed Out, Explosive Weaponary

Lineup Details

  • Zintar Mortalis (Summoner): -1 melee damage to all enemy monsters.

  • Animated Corpse: Chosen due to Healed Out ruleset preventing me from playing Haunted Spirit as it wouldn't be able to utilise its Heal ability.

  • Prismatic Energy: high health tank to shield the backline from blast damage hitting Animated Corpse.

  • Furious Chicken + Creeping Ooze: sacrificial lamb for those Sneak / Snipe monsters.

  • Twisted Jester + Haunted Spider: primary DPS damage + Poison damage

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

How potent is the Blast ability? No wonder Yodin wins so many matches! My strategy going into the battle was to front-load health with Animated Corpse and Prismatic Energy having a combined 17 health. Having this health would protect the backline from the Explosive Weaponary ruleset where every monster has the Blast ability. This would allow the Twisted Jester and Haunted Spider duo to be the primary inflictors of damage for my team. As for the Animated Corpse, it did what I intended to do: soak up damage and try to chip in where possible with damage. Unfortunately, it was up against the Torhillo the Frozen, so it didn't fair too well. It was touch and go at the end, but the Poison strategy worked well, and we secured victory in the end with a final blow from the Haunted Spider.

Do you like the Animated Corpse? Why or why not?

Whenever I play Death Splinter, the Haunted Spirit is an automatic choice for a low-mana cap melee tank for position 1. The Animated Corpse is the backup if I cannot play Haunted Spirit due to ruleset restrictions that nullify its Heal ability. Would I recommend spending $53 on a level 5 Animated Corpse? No, I'd instead use the money to fund purchasing a level 2 Haunted Spirit with similar stats to Animated Corpse. Otherwise, I'd save the money to either purchase Onyx Sentinel or purchase 13 Chaos Legion packs when it's released on 8th December.
