I have been playing this game for a month now. The game is absolutely fantastic in every way I can imagine for a digital collectable trading card game.

What is Splinterlands?

Splinterlands is a digital collectable trading card game. Think Blizzard’s Hearthstone and Magic the Gathering, but on the blockchain.

So... Why should you play it then?

Difficulty

Easy to play, but challenging to master. There are many different splinters, cards, rulesets and mana cap, which all play to affect your pre-game battle strategy. The game keeps you on your toes, and you continuously need to be adapting your approach to the next battle.

Visual appealing presentation

In any game of Splinterlands, a lot is happening on the screen, so it imperative that it is easy to read. All the cards match the fantasy style of the game. Each card appearances tells us something about the monsters and summoners and their personalities. The visual and art design is excellent, and a massive kudos should be given to the art team!

Quick Battles

Each battle of Splinterlands takes less than 1 minute. This serves a couple of purposes: you don’t have time to get frustrated – losses are short-lived, and the brief battles mean that if you are a disadvantage, then it doesn’t last long and allows you to go back to the drawing board to refine your strategy.

Fun and varied Cards

There are many summoners, and monsters split into different splinters, melee, ranged and magic card types. Melee cards can be bruiser tanks that thrive at the front of the battle. Range cards can be steady damage dealers or experts at evading damage. Magic cards are versatile as they can provide healing, buffs or debuffs, damage – which can give a team their edge.

Active online community

The official discord community boasts details of the game, news, developers and founders communicating with the community. The community is immense and thriving.

Healthy Competition

One of the primary advantages of playing splinterlands, in my opinion, is playing battles against other players and learning from these battles to improve and refine your own strategy. This, coupled with the 2 week seasons, there is always something to strive towards to get better and climb the ranks.

Cards as an investment…sort of?

Splinterlands cards have value and can be traded, bought and sold on the auction house. Your deck has a total value, and for some players, this can be very attractive and lucrative to play the game. There are also different variants of cards (e.g. gold foil) which command a higher price and some of these cards attract a hefty price on the market. It is up to you. Personally, rather than stressing on the values of cards, I just play the game and have fun.
