The Moon on a Sunny Day
It was right around 10 in the morning and Miss Erika was teaching the class with Math lessons. And just like many other students, Jeremy really doesn't get along with numbers. He's not bad, but he wasn't that good either. He finds Math equations a little overbearing. He thought that he wouldn't have much use for them in the real world after all.
Instead of listening to the complicated expressions, Miss Erika was discussing upfront, he opted to look out of the window. He can hear her talking but nothing was really registering in his mind, the words she was speaking slowly faded away in the background as the rustling of the leaves with the wind entered the focus of his mind. He looked up in the sky and was a bit confused when he realized what he was seeing.
The sky's blue as ever and it was bright as the day could be. But then he was staring directly into the heavenly body shining faintly in the sky. It was the moon. It appeared closer, bigger, and most importantly, it's there. He thought that seeing the moon early in the morning is just okay, but seeing the moon that late in the day is out of the normal situation.
He could hear the gears inside his head begin turning and he was trying to come up with an explanation as to why he is seeing the moon riding high in the sky along with the sun. He found it amazing and he was really curious.
He secretly took out his phone to check the time and then look back at the moon outside the window. He did the back and forth several times.
He wanted to search for the answer on Google but he wasn't having enough coverage for an internet search. His fingers began tapping on his desk while he was thinking and formulating some hypotheses to satisfy his curious brain.
"Any questions?" Miss Erika addressed the class.
An almost unanimous "None" echoed around the room. Almost, because there was one hand raised amidst the class' unity.
"Yes Ms. Kirisawa?" the teacher acknowledged Momo who was raising her hand diligently.
It wasn't every day that Momo pays any attention to classes so Miss Erika was a bit enthusiastic about how to answer whatever Momo's question is gonna be. She eagerly waited for her to speak.
Momo then stood up and the whole class looked at her including Jeremy who was just brought back to reality by the sudden silence that took over the classroom.
"Why can we see the moon this late at the day?" Momo asked.
The silent class became even quieter.
"I am not sure that it's a Math class but I guess I can entertain it." the hesitant teacher said as Momo sat back down. Every head turned to Miss Erika then except Jeremy whose eyes were glued to Momo who was feigning innocence about all of it.
Miss Erika explained that the moon never really leaves the sky when the day comes. It's always there just like any other heavenly body. The reason why we can't usually see it during the day is that the sun's light is too bright for any other star or the moon to be seen.
At certain times of the year, when the position of the moon is placed at a certain point, it will be visible because it is reflecting the sun's light just enough to be visible to the naked eye. As it happens, even Mars and Venus are also visible if you could look close enough with the right tools.
"I hope that answers your question."
"It does, thank you Miss." Momo replied and the class was dismissed.
The students then scattered and minded their own business. Jeremy was still staring at Momo and she finally paid attention to him.
"What? Is there something on my face? You're thinking of something lewd now, aren't you? Perv!"
"I was just wondering... how you.. why...uhm..."
Momo stood up and picked her bag up on her way to the cafeteria. She tapped Jeremy's shoulder before going and said, "You're not the only one who can see the moon and is curious about it." She then walked away.
Jeremy watched her walk out the door and he looked at the moon again.
"Wait... does that mean?" he contemplated for a bit but shook his head in disbelief. He was thinking that that means Momo was paying attention to him. He thought that it meant Momo was looking at him as he was looking at the moon. Momo was looking at him! But in the end, he shook the feeling thinking that it was highly unlikely. Maybe she just happened to see him riled up about it.
