How do you learn to write?

First you must have something to write about. develop your powers of observation. Learn to look at things. Open your eyes to the world about you, to the people you meet, to the things you pass by. People are very interesting- so different from each other and yet so marvelously alike. The same things make them laugh ; the same thing make them angry. Animals are equally interesting. You learn much from them and you can get companionship from them.

Next you must develop your imagination. By means of your imagination you can go to other lands, see different people and scenery, and observe different ways of life. Through your imagination you can close your eyes to things ugly, unpleasant, and mean in the world. You can enter a world of beauty, the world od make-believe, the land where dreams come true. Let imagination enrich your life.

The essential to good writing is to develop power over words. Enlarge your vocabulary; develop an interest in words. Learn to pour yourself out, actually pour out your mind on paper. Write as you think. Make your writing simple and natural. Do not try to impress others with long words that may not express your meaning exactly. When you can write in such a way that you can make your reader see and feel, you have developed the power to write creatively. The ability to write is a gift. It's a lot of fun to be able to write well. All you need is pen and paper - plenty of paper. Always remember that the secret of good writing is to learn to pour yourself out. Give part of yourself in what you write and you will surely write well.
