New technology has changed the world and solved many problems. Technology has also changed the way we live. Automobiles and jet planes have made it possible for us to reach far-off places quickly. Television and movies have made us familiar with places and events worldwide.
But technology has also caused new problems. One such problem is pollution. Pollution is the presence of unwanted or harmful substances in the environment. the same technology that has provided fast transportation has also caused smog. Smog is kind of air pollution that hangs over many cities. Smog results when exhaust from automobiles and smoke from factories enters the air. This pollution burns people's eyes and throats and hurts their lungs.
Pollution is also a killer. It has killed vast foresta and thousands of lakes. When rain and snow fall, they often deposit chemicals from polluted air onto trees ans bodies of water. Called Acid rain, this precipitation kills trees ans pollutes lakes and rivers. It also kills both the plants and the animals that live in the waters. As you may know, acid rain is formed by the reaction of the water vapor in clouds with pollutants. The pollutants are gases discharged into the air by factory smokestacks. The gases are formed by the burning of coal, oil and natural gas. The gases form strong acids with water. A strong acid is found in the battery of a car for example. Example of weak acids are lemon juice and vinegar. But imagine imagine how house plants would react if they were sprinkled with vinegar. Pollution is out of control. We have lost so much as a result of acid rain. It is time we come up with strict protective measures in order to prevent more damage.
