The word Greed, am sure isn't new to many of us but the fact still remains that greed has sent many to an early grave. Greed describes lack of satisfaction, wanting more, not contented, it is the intense and selfish desire for something, no matter what you have as a person, there is this selfish drive to acquire more even when you don't need it. Stories about greedy people never end well.
Sometime in 1997, A young man had completed his degree at an early age, acquired his master degree 2 years after that, he was give a job in the bank, very promising young man with a progressive future. So John commenced his banking career on a very clean record, he was doing very well for himself, was loved by many, even his colleagues.
I was also fortunate to have finished well in school with a wonderful certificate, it was too long I joined in the bank job. I met with John and we became good friends and colleagues, we were almost together.
Our job as this time in the bank involves cash movement, we move cash from our smaller bank to the mother banks and we had done this on several occasions and had no issue but GREED SET IN. We were supposed to move cash from ABA to Portharcout and I was asked to lead the team. I never knew what was going on until I was called by my CSO (Chief Security Officer), who told me of their plan to instigate a robbery, Jesus!!!!!, they had a plan of stealing 10 million naira. As a matter of fact I was actually doing well for myself, at least I own a mercedez 190 as at that time but I still needed the money. On the day of the planned attack, i pretended to be sick and shivering.
John who was my friend and partner was asked to lead the team, I did observed he was called to the inner room to inform him of the deal as he own share would be three million (3,000,000.00), as I was told earlier, who would not want such money?, it wasn't difficult convincing John about the deal. According to the plan the escorts were supposed to shot the team leader and the driver on the leg so that I can look like a robbery.
They got to ABA, picked the cash successfully and on there way back they called the office to inform them of the change of route as the other route won't be favorable, the plan was actually working well, when they got to the point of action, the escorts opened fire, shot at what ever they saw. Well, plan worked out well, the money was stolen, injuries were sustained as planned but something pathetic happened, JOHN WAS MISSING.
How can John be missing? On reaching home, I was called that the bullion van carrying cash has been attacked, to me it wasn't new as I knew the plan, but my colleague John was no were within reach. After a visit to the site of incidents, John's body was found lifeless as he was shot on the forehead. For a young promising young man to loose his life just like that because of Greed? It would have been me, if I never opted out of the game.
John was dead, he was the only son of his mother, no wife, no children. About 6 months later I was in the office when the CSO was handcuffed and taken to the police, investigations trace there calls and in no time he was put in prison and charged for stealing and murder. Everybody involved had been caught and made to face the consequences of their action. It was a lesson for me which I have carried on for over 25 years in my banking career.
Running through my mind as my uncle was still speaking about this experience to me is the fact that many will still read this and not believe. Well, I was thought to learn from other people's mistakes. I hope it sinks down to our soul. Greed is really a dangerous act, it gives birth to other dangerous act such envying, killing etc, and we all should run away from it.
