Allegory of the flag. Part 2

"Time waits for no one - Folklore"

Hours later of non-stop galloping, they’ve reached the base of the mountain, ready to make the climb. It was unfortunate for them, the rain caught up, making the way to top muddy. It was already breaking dawn, and that was a sign to hasten their pace.

Chaos can be heard across the horizon, the war has already continued. The other kingdom was fuming mad by the surprise attack earlier, bolstering their front-lines with heavy infantry. The remaining forces from the kingdom, was forced to do a last stand, hoping to see the light of day when they’ve have truly captured the flag.

The weather was harsh, the rains were starting to get heavier, and the battle was wreaking havoc over the peninsula. It was like Ares was watching over them from above.

Meanwhile, the recon team made their day-long climb to the top. Having to encounter some creatures that were larger than an average human, they had losses, although minimal, since their scholars already foreseen what most type would they encounter assuming it would be the same from both sides, but it was different, some creatures were too aggressive for their own good, rendering their equipment ineffective. They truly didn’t anticipate this soon enough.

It didn’t take long to muster up their courage, powered by their pride, they slaughtered every monster and went past corpses both human and animal alike. While rushing to the peak of the mountain top, all they could ever think was the possibility of ruling the land and uniting them once again, under one land, under one identity, knowing that all of their losses weren’t in vain.

“Don’t you think the winds are getting stronger?” One soldier said, “It’s been quiet ever since–strange.” they all just looked at him and gave him a shrug as victory is already at their doorsteps.

The flag waved through the gusty wind as the soldiers above watched in awe and horror as they arrived at the peak. With the flag standing beside them, unwavered with what’s in front of its eyes. A storm, already kilometres away from the sea, enough to wipe out the entire peninsula. The people below were in total shock as death itself make its grand entrance. Unable to make preparations with their ships, they abandoned the battlefield and tended to their families, accepting the grueling faith both kingdoms have been bestowed upon.

Some of the soldiers who survived in the campaign to the mountain took their own life, not able to take the horrifying sight that was about to happen. The captain took off his own armor and watched as the gigantic storm makes its landfall starting to wreak havoc. The flag’s fluttering noise caught his attention and brought himself to examine it at the last time.

Realizing, what the flag stood for and that,

“We were too late.”

End.
