A tooth abscess is caused by a bacterial infection and can occur in different areas of the tooth for different reasons. The symptoms that we present when detecting a dental abscess are: stabbing pains, sensitivity when chewing or biting, alteration in the ability to taste, bad breath, swelling of the face, red and painful gums, difficulty swallowing, swollen and painful lymph nodes, fever and general malaise.
When we present one of these symptoms and while we schedule a consultation with the dentist we can use some natural remedies that are effective to provide relief from discomfort.
Black tea:
Black tea contains antioxidants that help fight infection. In dental abscesses it is used as they absorb some of the toxins and pus.
Soak the black tea bag in warm water for a few minutes, squeeze it and place it on the inflamed area. Leave it there for a few hours or overnight, then rinse your mouth with a salt water solution.
Garlic:
Garlic is a natural antibiotic, as it has an active compound called allicin, which helps prevent bacterial infections. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that relieve pain and swelling.
Peel and wash 3 garlic cloves, crush them and extract the juice (this releases the allicin compound) and then apply it to the affected area.
Cloves:
Clove is an excellent remedy for any type of dental condition, as it has antiseptic, analgesic, and antibacterial properties that help relieve toothache, inflammation, and sore gums.
In a bowl mix the clove powder with the water to form a paste. Apply to the affected part and leave for 15 minutes.
Apple cider vinegar:
Apple cider vinegar contains two acids called acetic acid and malic acid that are excellent antibacterials, antimicrobials, and antifungals. As well as it has disinfectant and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce pain and inflammation. In these cases, it is advisable to use raw apple cider vinegar.
Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in your mouth and rinse. Leave it for 5 minutes and then rinse your mouth with warm water.
Oregano oil:
Oregano oil has antibacterial, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that help eliminate bacteria using small amounts. When used on a tooth abscess, it numbs the affected area. Oil of oregano is used for dental abscesses, as it helps to drain them, while eliminating the bacteria found in the pus.
Place 3 drops of oregano oil directly on a cotton swab. Apply the swab directly to the affected tooth and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Together, make a mouthwash by mixing 3-5 drops of oregano with ΒΌ cup of warm water. Use the mixture to rinse your mouth for about 5 minutes.
Tips to avoid abscesses in teeth:
Use baking soda and peroxide-based toothpaste.
Use a soft toothbrush.
Brush your teeth three times a day.
Use antimicrobial mouthwash after every brushing.
We should replace the toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.
Wire or interdental cleaner to clean between teeth daily. Avoid junk food and eat healthy.
Avoid drinking coffee when you have pain or a dental infection.
Suggestion:
When we have dental abscesses, it is very important to attend the dentist since sometimes symptoms such as fever, swelling in the face or difficulty swallowing may suggest that the infection has spread and must be treated immediately.
