Famous ships

Some ships, such as the Titanic are famous because they sank, but here are some that are for a variety of other reason

Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria

The three ships on Christopher Columbus' voyage of 1492 to America.

Mayflower

The ship that took the settlers known as the Pilgrim Fathers from Plymouth to America in 1620

Endeavour

Captain James Cook's ship on his exploration of Australia and New Zealand in 1768-71.

Bounty

The crew of this British ship mutinied against Captain William Bligh in 1789.

Victory

Captain Horatio Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. It is now on display in Portsmouth.

Beagle

The research ship on which British scientist Charles Darwin visited the Galápagos Islands in 1835.

Cutty Sark

A tea clipper (a sailing ship designed to bring tea from China as fast as possible) launched in 1869 The ship is preserved in dry dock at Greenwich, London.

Great Eastern

This ship was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and launched in 185a It laid the first transatlantic cable in 1866, but was scrapped in 1888,

Marie Celeste

A US ship found abandoned in the Atlantic in 1872. The fate of its crew remains a mystery.

Kon-Tiki

A balsa wood raft on which Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl sailed from South America across the Pacific, to Polynesia in 1947. He made the voyage to prove his theory that Polynesian people came from South America.
