Tourism and hospitality is a supply chain industry

The Hospitality industry acts as a supplier of products tourism uses these products. Components of tourism and hospitality include food and beverages, accommodation and lodging, recreation and entertainment and travel and tourism.

Travel and Tourism component

Tourism is the social, economic and cultural phenomenon wherein people move from one place to another place outside of their usual environment for the reasons of leisure travel or business travels. Tourism can be classified into domestic tourism, inbound tourism and outbound tourism.

Five (5) Components of Tourism

Attraction- is considered to be the most important basic component of tourism. It means any things or any places that a person desires.

Accessibility- means the reachability of the place of destination the tourists wants to via various means of transportation.

Accommodation- Another important component of tourism is accommodation which is the primary service that the tourist needs at the destination. It is a place where the tourists can find food and shelter.

Amenities- are extra facilities that can add attractiveness, accessibility and accommodation for the tourists.

Activities

The components of tourism can be provided with the hospitality industry. The hospitality industry is a mix of service providers who welcome guests with open arms and take care of their most basic needs, as well as their emotional well-being.

Three (3) perspective of Hospitality

The guest perspective- this is the perspective wherein as people who serve and give products must achieved the expectations of their guests- receive good hospitality making costumers or the guest feel comfortable and well-served.

The Operator- in a hospitality setting, the guest exists to be served; the operator exists to serve. To be able to be considered as hospitable, the operator must be successful in making guests feel comfortable and well-catered to.

The Tech Perspective- the increase in the needs of the people results to increase in demand of tourism and hospitality services such as restaurants, lodging and car rentals. This causes problem such as long lines in waiting to be accommodated, these problems may lead unsatisfactory reactions from guests and customers. With, technology, restaurants and hotels use reservation, seating, and guest management tools to reduce such problem.

Meaning of Tourist

Visitor is the term used to people who are travelling from one place to another and these people are visitors travelling for leisure and they may be classified into tourists and or excursionists and or as domestic tourists, inbound tourists and outbound tourists based from UNTWO.

Plog’s Model of Tourist Behavior

Tourist also have different behaviors that can be altered based from geographical factors, social factors, and places of origin, tourism destination and education of tourist.

According to the Plog’s Model, can be classified into (3) categories:

Allocentric (The Wanderers)- A tourist who seeks new experiences and adventure in a wide range of activities. An allocentric person prefers to fly and to explore new and unusual areas before others do so.

Psychocentric (The Repeater)- A tourist falling in this category is usually non-adventuresome. They prefer to return to familiar travel destinations where they can relax and know what types of food and activity to expect.

Midentric (Combination)- This category of tourists covers the ones who swing between the above and two types.

According to Henley Center of Holiday Making, tourists can be divided into (4) phases

Phase I- Bubble Travelers- They do not have much money as well as knowledge. They prefer package tour. They travel mostly out of curiosity

Phase II- Idealized Experience Seekers- They are confident tourists with the experience of foreign tours. They are flexible and comfortable. They prefer tour offers made for individuals.

Phase III- Seasoned Travelers- These tourists are more affluent than the idealized-experience seekers. They are more adventurous and prefer individualistic tours.

Phase IV- Complete Immersers- These tourist have an intention of immersing completely into the foreign culture, heritage, culinary experience, and language. Their holidaying is well-planned but not well- structured.

(5) Elements of Travel

1. Reason for journey- The first element of travel is the purpose of why a tourist will travel in the first place.

2. Distance to travel- The distance of travel is another important element and can determine what form of transport would be taken to complete the journey. Under this the tourist must consider the difference between local and international traveling.

3. Length of stay at the destination- The definition of tourists and excursionists by UNWTO is directly associated to this element.

4. Residence of the tourist- This important element for the destination’s government for them to monitor which country or race visits the country frequently

5. Form of travel- The last element of travel is the forms of transport which is also considered to be a crucial element to travel and as mentioned before the other factors can contribute to what form of transport selected.

Tourist Product

Are the services and products that tourists avail in exchange of money.

There are four (4) characteristic of tourist products

Intangible- can’t be seen, tasted, felt, heard of smelled before being purchased

Inseparable- can’t be separated from service providers

Variable- quality depends on who provides them and when, where and how

Perishable- can’t be stored for later sale or use

Tourist Destination

Are products and services that tourism and hospitality could offer. They are considered to be natural resources and are used as attractions for tourists because of their cultural and natural values.

Characteristic of Tourism and Hospitality

Dynamic- this industry in undergoing evolution.

Seasonal-these tourist products are seasonal and number of buyers may differ depending on the time of the year- such as beach resort during summer, date of festivals- Panagbenga during February.

Labor – extensive- the human resource is very important in this industry as most of the services can be supplied using man-power.
