For those who do not know, Honduras, my country, was hit by Hurricane Eta and it has been one of the worst natural disasters we have experienced after Hurricane Mitch, 24 years before. I want to cry of impotence, of sadness, it breaks my heart to see how people have lost their homes, belongings, if material things but that they obtained with a great sacrifice, they have lost their loved ones and they have little access to electricity. My beautiful Sula Valley is flooded, roads that once passed, destroyed, streets and homes that one day I visit no longer exist, known and unknown people have lost everything and it will be an irreparable loss.
I admire and thank all those people who took the initiative to help, to render their services, to risk their lives in order to help. All those companies that provided transportation, BOATS (which has been a fundamental tool to rescue those who were trapped), to the franchises and small restaurants that came to help with food, to the same town that is mobilizing to transport people and donate food and money. Tears of pride come to my eyes for the people of this country, people outside politics, outside the state. These people are worthy of admiration and I hope that in due course they will be rewarded as THE HEROES they have been, the only ones who responded to the call for help in the last 24 hours without rest.
The next 24 hours are crucial to rescuing and safeguarding people's lives. If the terrible part is over, the hurricane has lost its strength, however rivers, lakes and dams have reached their peak. The government has issued an alert to announce that they have a time limit to take refuge because they will release / discharge the water from these dams which will cause further flooding.
It fills me with anger that the government has been absent all this time, that the authorities have not come forward or provided help at any time. The only thing they have served during this time is to announce the status / movement of the hurricane. A couple of weeks ago we were in elections, all the candidates made propaganda of "A better Honduras" and the typical story that they will make here and there are a hundred thousand things. Now when they are most needed and when they should show interest towards the people ... ALL Disappeared. No one has offered to help or help others, but what to expect from a corrupt government, where drug trafficking rules ...
*** Thank the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukel, who has all the love of the Honduran people. He announced from the beginning that he would provide aid to the affected countries: Nicaragua and Honduras; and if he kept his word. ***
Clarifying that all this fortunately / unfortunately is in the coastal area of the country, in which I lived for 20 years. In the city where I live now there were no disasters or floods. Yes, I feel sad and ugly but I will never know what exactly what these people are going through feels like and I honestly wish I would never go through that. My friends and family in that area are safe and secure, except for an uncle who did lose his house.
