Dawson's Creek

I've been watching a tv show from 1998 called Dawson's Creek. My sister-in-law tells me she watched it back in the day. I'm going to tell you about it now, because this is some wacky stuff! Stick around 'till the end.

The show centers around a kid named Dawson. He's in his shophmore year of high school, about 15 years old, and he's obsessed with making movies.

In the first episode we find out that Dawson and Joey, longtime best friends, have been very close, hanging out and scheming and even sleeping together for several years as best friends. They work on Dawson's movies, and their relationship is entirely platonic, but Joey insists that she and Dawson's relationship will change as they grow into puberty.

She is soon proven right as they fight jealousy and brief romantic tension, when New Yorker Jen moves into town and quickly becomes Dawson's love interest. Dawson, however, makes a fool of himself several times, and the tension is kind of resolved.

In the second and third episode, though a little pressure remains between the two, Joey playfully helps Dawson with his relationship woes, and Dawson ends up kissing the girl while trespassing in an orchard to film a short clip for his movie, in an attempt to make a perfect first kiss. It's a pretty fun story so far.

What's the wacky stuff I mentioned? Well, I've yet to tell you about Dawson's other friend, Pacey. Despite being a sophomore in high school, Pacey is written and acted entirely like an adult.

I don't know much about their relationship, because when they're on-screen together, Pacey is usually helping Dawson film a movie or making a brief excuse to go chase his love interest, a middle-aged woman who works at their high school.

Now, I've watched this story play out in shows what seems like a hundred times. A kid thinks they can chase after a teacher or other older authority figure. After a possibly funny series of attempts at flirting, the adult gently, but firmly, lets them down, and tells the child that they will find someone special and their age to share their life with bla bla bla, right?

Well, in this show, the teacher kisses the 15-year-old. Then, over the third episode, they proceed to have weird tutoring sessions where she promises to give him "positive reinforcement" for doing well on a test, in the class that she teaches him, in high school. The episode ends with the two making love, trespassing in the same orchard where Dawson and Jen have their first kiss.

He was very pushy and almost stalker-ish with the teacher, and the teacher made it clear several times that she has mental health issues. That doesn't excuse her role in the situation, of course, but it is very weird how direct and authoritative this high schooler is in their relationship.

I didn't know I'd be writing that sentence this morning, but here we are! This was on TV 20 years ago, and they made six seasons. I'm only on the third episode! I was just shocked how that episode concluded, and I was compelled to share. What do you think?

Should I keep watching, and should I write about the next few episodes?
