The newest movie for The Conjuring Universe was released this month. It raised a few eyebrows because of many reasons. One is that the new movie is to be directed by another director, making the audience think that the cinematography and everything will change. Since moviegoers like to watch the franchise of a certain movie, directed by the director of the first movie, the change makes the audience worry and excited, at the same time.
As a horror movie fan, the changes in the crew are also my worry when it comes to new releases. It does worry me a lot since besides the story and acting of the main actors in a film, I also judge the clothes, cinematography, lighting, visuals, and many more in between of a film.
The Conjuring Universe is always a hit. In fact, even though this is a demonic-case type of story, just like any other film-related, one thing that made it catch the audience's impact is the unique storyline of each film. Personally, what attracted me the most is the way Vera Farmiga portrayed Lorraine Warren. She doesn't overreact to the story, but at the same time, she handled it, the way the real Mrs. Warren lives in the real world when she was still living.
Anyways, let's dive into the story. So the story goes like this:
Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal researchers, take part in one of the most shocking cases after a cop stumbles on a bloody young man walking along the road. Accused of murder, the suspect claimed demonic possession as his defense, and unlike anything, they had ever seen before forced Warrens to undergo a supernatural investigation.
I just finished the movie and these are my review.
Let's talk about the storyline first. Now, don't get me wrong, the reason I like horror movies is the way stories look like as if the audience will know what happens next, but in fact, it will not. And it happened here. The trailer, itself, already showed a man who killed someone, who is said to be possessed by a demon, so for me, the audience will just know what happened next or why he did what he did. But it's not. There's more to it. It didn't fully surprise me, but I can say that it reached my expectations for the movie.
I don't want to spoil anything since I want those who haven't seen it to really watch the movie.
Next, the acting. As I've said, I came for Vera, and I stayed for Vera. Once again, she did a really good job in here. Patrick also did a good job but I can't properly say that he has to have an Oscar. His acting reached my expectations of him. I have to say that I needed more from the other actors. I'm not in the position to say that they deserve or don't deserve awards but it was okay. Their acting was enough for the role.
Lastly, the cinematography. I love horror films, but at the same time, indie films. This is a mainstream film so I have to adjust myself after watching an indie film to understand how this movie is made. I can say that it didn't go into an exaggeration when it comes to how they filmed it. Although, there was a slight kick in comparison to the two previous films. But then again, it still stood out against other horror films.
All in all, the movie was great. It doesn't have that much scary or jumpy moments but of course, the audience came there for the story, not to be scared.
I highly recommend everyone to watch it.
I'll give The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, a score of 8.5/10.
