New Focus Daily Quests, Focus Points, Change to ECR Consumption: Examples and Considerations

Yesterday, July 21, 2022, important changes were introduced to the Ranked Rewards mechanism:

- 14 new types of Daily Focus missions were introduced

- the mechanism for awarding Focus points was modified

- the Energy Capture Rate (ECR) consumption mechanism has been modified

- the possible content found within chests has been modified

New Daily Focus Quests

Before the recent changes, Daily Focus Quests could only be of 6 types:

- Fire Focus

- Water Focus

- Death Focus

- Life Focus

- Earth Focus

- Dragon Focus

Now, to the Focus Daily missions I listed above, 14 new missions have been added based on card abilities instead of card elements.

In the image below you can see all 14 new daily focus quests.

Each of the 14 new quests incentivizes the player to use cards that have certain abilities in battle:

- Anti-Magic: Void, Phase, Void Armor.

- Disable: Piercing, Stun

- Reflect: Backfire, Return Fire, Magic Reflect

- Exploits: Oppress, Giant Killer, Deathblow

- Stealth: Sneak, Snipe, Opportunity

- Fatalities: Bloodlust, Life Leech, Redemption, Scavenger

- Anti-Melee: Thorns, Retaliate

- Healing: Tank Heal, Heal, Cleanse, Triage

- Buffs: Swiftness, Inspire, Protect, Strengthen

- Allments: Poison, Affliction, Weaken

- Defend: Shield, Repair

- Impair: Demoralize, Silence, Headwinds, Blinds.

- Nullify: Shatter, Cripple, Dispel

- Flying: Fly

Modification to the Focus Points attribution mechanism

Yesterday, July 21, the mechanism for attribution of Focus Points was also changed.

Previously, in order to earn Focus points useful for obtaining daily rewards (chests), it was necessary to use only summoners of the element indicated by the Focus Daily.

While this requirement incentivized players to improve the battle strength of the card collection in a balanced way by buying and upgrading cards of all elements on the other hand it introduced some monotony into the daily game sessions.

I, for example, used to use mainly only the cards of the element indicated by the focus daily even though I was well know that using cards of another element would make it easier for me to achieve victory in battle and would achieve a better win rate.

Now all cards of any element contribute to gaining focus points even if they do not comply with the Focus Daily quest theme.

Obviously using cards that respect the theme of the daily quest allows the player to earn more focus points and rewards points but now the player has more freedom in strategic game choices and can earn focus points for each battle won.

A practical example: two battles, two different rewards!

To show in a practical way the effect of the new change to the attribution of Focus Points, I deliberately played two battles:

- in the first battle I did not respect the daily mission theme

- in the second battle I tried to use as many cards relevant to the daily mission as possible.

My current Daily focus is DRAGON, which means that if I use Dragon element cards in a battle and win the battle I get more Focus points and Season points for each Dragon element card I used.

In the first battle I did not use dragon element cards.

I used the water element summoner Alric Stormbringer and used 5 water element cards and one neutral element card.

Before the start of the battle I had:

- a rating score of 3002 points

- an ECR of 70.06%.

I won the battle and even though I did not use dragon element cards I earned an equal amount of Season Points and Focus Points.

From the battle victory I gained:

- 25336 Season Points

- 25336 Focus Points

- 9,386 DEC tokens

- 28 rating points

In the second battle I tried to meet the condition of my Focus Daily and used four out of seven cards of the dragon element:

- one Dragon element summoner (Daria Dragonscale)

- three monster cards of the Dragon element (Gold Dragon, Fiendish Harpy and Manticore).

The battle is not at all interesting strategically because my opponent literally committed suicide by deploying only one card but what matters for the purposes of my post today is the reward received from the battle won.

Before the battle began I had:

- a rating of 3010 points

- an ECR of 69.05%.

Thanks to the use of 4 dragon element cards out of a total of 7 I got as a reward:

- 32786 Season Points

- 32786 Focus Points

- 12,194 DEC tokens

- +24 rating points

In the second battle I obtained 7450 more Reward Points than in the first battle and would have obtained even more Reward Points if I had used only dragon element cards.

Modification to the Energy Capture Rate

The third change concerns the Energy Capture Rate (ECR) consumption rate.

The ECR is an important element in the calculation of reward points because with all other elements being equal (rating score, % starting cards, ...) the higher the ECR, the higher the number of reward points earned from each battle won.

Before the recent change, ECR decreased by 1% for each battle won or lost.

As of yesterday, July 21, 2022:

- the ECR decreases by 1% when its value is greater than 50%.

- the ECR decreases by 5% only for each battle won when its value is less than 50%.

So going below a percentage value of 50% ECR is definitely not worthwhile!

Modification to the contents of the Chests

The latest change concerns the content of the chests.

Before yesterday, July 21, 2021, a single chest could contain:

- 1 Reward edition card

- a certain amount of DEC tokens

- 1 single potion (alchemical or legendary)

- 1 pack of Chaos Legion cards.

Now within a single chest it is possible to find:

- 1 card from the Reward edition

- a certain amount of DEC tokens

- a certain amount of potions (it is possible to find a multiple amount of alchemical or legendary potions)

- a certain amount of MERITS.

MERITs tokens are expendable in the shop section of Splinterlands (Guild subsection) to buy Gladius Cases, Blood Stone potions, and Power Stone potions**

In the image below you can see the last daily reward I received (contents of 9 chests).

I found 5 Reward Edition cards, 160 DEC tokens, 19 legendary potions, 21 alchemical potions and 112 MERITs.

Final Considerations

All the changes introduced by Splinterlands that I have listed and explained in this post are all changes that I like.

In particular I like that there are new Daily Focus missions because with the addition of new daily objectives the game activity will become more varied and less monotonous because the game strategies will have to be adapted to a greater number of possile daily focuses and consequently the fun will also increase.

Regarding the content of the chests I have read some posts from players who are not happy with the addition of MERITs as a possible prize because they do not play in the Brawls.

I am a member of the EDSF guild and have been playing the Brawls for several months now and playing in the Brawls is an activity that I like and enjoy very much!

If you are a Splinterlands player, not part of a Guild, and have never played in the Brawls I suggest you try it for the following reasons:

- the Brawls are fun

- the Gladius cards even though they cannot be used in Ranked Battles:

- they increase the collection power score

- they can be converted into DECs

- will be useful in future perspective and when Lands are introduced

- in the future among the rewards of Brawls will be SPSs.

If you can't find a free place in a guild you can create your own and invite your friends.

By the way the current value of DEC tokens makes creating a Guild a relatively inexpensive task.

In fact, creating a Guild has a cost of 10000 DEC which is equivalent to an expense of about $5.60

To participate in the Brawls, it is not enough to create a Guild but it is also necessary to build the Arena which has a cost of 10000 DEC.

Today with less than $12 you can create a guild and participate in Brawls ;)

And you dear reader, how do you evaluate the recent changes?

If you like, please write me your opinion in the comments and I will be happy to read it.

Thank you for reading my post I hope you liked it and thank you for giving me your time

Are you not a Splinterlands player?

Splinterlands is a beautiful game and it has proved to be a very good investment for me (at least until now) and if you regularly participate to the weekly contests organized by the @splinterlands account on Hive you will recover the registration cost (10$) in a short time.

If you decide to register, you can do it from this link:

of course if you'd like to use my refferal link... :)

Any game that involves the purchase of cards and tokens is never a simple game but it is also an investment and should be considered as such.

I am not a financial consultant and if you decide to invest in the game of Splinterlands you do it for your own choice, after having made your personal evaluations and considered all possible risk factors.

My advice is to always invest only what you can afford to lose with a light heart!

See you on the battlefields of Splinterlands.
