What is SMART farming? Agriculture 4.0 and 5.0?

Smart Farming is defined as a farming management concept using modern technology to increase the quantity and quality of agricultural products. Farmers in the 21st century have access to the Global Positioning System (GPS), soil scanning, data management, and IoT (“Internet of Things”) technologies.

Agriculture 4.0

Agricultural technologies are rapidly evolving towards a new paradigm – Agriculture 4.0. Within this paradigm, digitalization, automation and artificial intelligence play a major role in crop production, including weeding and pest control. This evolution presents both challenges and opportunities, such as leapfrogging from manual and animal-driven technologies to automated and mechanized equipment in developing countries and closing the digital divide. Traditional agricultural mechanization, characterized using tractors and engine power, will be matched and even surpassed by automated equipment and robotics and the precision they can provide in

farm operations.

Agricultural robots will also be able to substitute arduous labour, especially when

there is limited availability, thus increasing social sustainability. The development of Agriculture 4.0 will create new opportunities that can attract youth and entrepreneurs into the sector, tackling some of the causes for rural–urban migration and contributing to the economic component of sustainability.

Agriculture 5.0: Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Help in Nourishing People

Big engineering challenges typically spur big solutions through disruptive technologies, and Agriculture 5.0 is probably the one for the first half of the 21st Century. The concept Agriculture 5.0 implies that farms are following Precision Agriculture principles and using equipment that involves unmanned operations and autonomous decision support systems. Thus, Agriculture 5.0 implies the use of robots and some forms of AI.

What 21st century skills do you possess that you can apply in electrification?

As a generation z individual, I have acquired 21st Century Skills that are essential in life and in electrification course such skills include but are not limited to, entrepreneurial, marketing, communications, and critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

A.   Entrepreneurial Skills, as with the amount of autonomy small-scale farmers are afforded because of smart farming, it should be no surprise if they wanted to promote and sell their produce on their own.

B.    Marketing Skills, since entrepreneurship and marketing tend to go hand in hand, but the latter is particularly seen as one of the areas where the tech-savvy youth can play a part in.

C.   Communication Skills, seeing as smart farming has the potential to bridge farmers and agriculture experts together, it is vital for both parties to understand each other clearly so that they could address any issue that may arise in the farmlands. Writing and numeracy are key topics in this regard, but interpersonal communication also goes a long way in improving farmer relationships.

D.   Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, given that farmers will likely face complex situation s that require them to formulate effective solutions, especially when there is no outside help available.

What Training Regulations (TR) are useful and aligned to ABE Electrification?

As of February 2020, TESDA offers the following TRs are directly related to this sector:

In addition to these, a TR for Solar Powered Irrigation System (SPIS) Operation and  Maintenance NC II was also developed during the first quarter of 2020.  Of these TRs, only a handful such as Agricultural Machinery Operations NC II, Rice  Machinery Operations NC II, Drying and Milling NC III, and Milking Operation NC II are  directly related to mechanization, which is a prerequisite for smart farming  technologies. Despite this, the agriculture and fisheries sector consistently see a high student enrollment rate every year.
