How to protect yourself in using social media?
Social media is always considered as part of our life and social lifestyle nowadys. In our generetion today, especially those who are still in their teenage years up to late 30's or 40's cannot live a long day without holding their gadgets and opening their social media accounts. We use different kinds of social media sites to socialize and reach our family and friends who are far from us, we are also using it to share our thoughts and feelings and even our beautiful pictures. Some are creating social media accounts just to be in trend.
As what I've said earlier, social media is now a part of our daily lives. It's hard for us to live a day away from it. Now, I won't be telling you to delete or deactivate your accounts, but I will suggest some things and ways to protect yourself in/while using your social media accounts.
1. Follow inspiring accounts - we should be careful on what and who we follow in our social media accounts, because those people, pages or groups we follow are the one we will see in our newsfeed everytime we logged in and go online. Make sure that those accounts are posting and sharing inspiring and motivational things and can help us to enlighten our day.
2. Unfollow triggering accounts - it's the exact opposite to our first one. It's like 180 degrees from the other one. Protecting ourself in social media also means unfollowing those accounts who are not giving us peace, motivation and calmness. We should also look after the user of the account if it is real or reliable. Remember that there are some people who are creating a social media accounts which has no good intentions. Some are scammers, who are looking for victims. Some are doing businesses that includes pornography and sexually abusing. And the others are just creating dummy accounts just to get some informations from us. Those things may affect and triggered us mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, spiritually and even financially.
3. Post with empathy and kindness - as we want to protect ourselves in what we see in our newsfeed. We must not forget that people around us needs to protect theirselves too. Think before you click.
Always remeber this things as you are creating a post:
3.1 Does it have a reliable source?
3.2 Does it lift up or brag people down?
3.3 Does it bring discomfortness or quarrel in different beliefs?
3.4 Can your post help our life in different aspects?
3.5 Can it enlighten someone's life?
If you think that your post will not and never be against those on the list and community standards of social media platforms, then go for it. Hit the post/upload button.
PS. Every post that you've done may be used for future references. There are some employers that are requiring you to open your accounts in their tabs or phones just to see what you're doing in social media.
4. Remind yourself that social media is not a reality - this phrase speaks for itself already. Social media is a social media. Reality is a reality. There are some posts that are not real in real life situations. There are some things there that are not applicable and not really happening in our real and daily lives. Remeber that fake news are all around the globe. Remind yourself not to believe easily in everything that you see.
As you've read this article of mine, I hope and I pray that you can use your social media accounts properly and in mannerly. Think before you click, because everyone in this world can see what you have post. Make your post worthy to see and read by everyone. God bless you!
