Tao Geoghegan Hart wins the Giro d'Italia number 103.
In the most exciting final stage in the history of the Giro d'Italia, the 25-year-old Briton from INEOS Grenadiers is radiant after beating Australian Jay Hindley in the last time trial. Hart finished thirteenth in the Cernusco Sul Naviglio time trial in Milan and 39 seconds behind Jay Hindley (Jai Team Sunweb) in the pink jersey, winning the "Endless Trophy": the two had the same overall time, but Geoghegan Hart claimed his time trial skills for the final triumph. Tao Geoghegan Hart wins the 103rd edition of the Giro d'Italia setting a record impossible to beat: he wears the pink jersey only at the end of the last stage, the 21st, in the previous stages he had never been at the top of the general classification (it happened only once, through the posthumous verdict of the sports judges and therefore not in the race, in 2011 and the Giro had gone to Scarponi). An act of great revenge for Hart after last year's fall at Colle de Lys and the consequent retirement. Hart had arrived at the Giro thinking he was helping Geraint Thomas, then put out of action by a bad fall caused by a water bottle. Day after day and stage after the stage he earned the rank of captain. The British rider faced the toughest climbs in this Giro fighting like a lion and winning two stage victories (Piancavallo and Sestriere), but the most important victory of his career came at the end of the final time trial of the Giro, winning the "rose" with only 39 seconds ahead of Jai Hindley. The last stage of the Giro was an all flat time trial starting from Cernusco Sul Naviglio and finishing in Milan and as in the opening stage in Palermo, the triumph was of Ganna. Filippo Ganna performed yet another feat at a fantastic speed of 54.506 km/h. The 24-year-old Piedmontese from Verbania won the fourth stage of his first Giro with a time of 17'16" and 32 seconds ahead of Belgian Campenaerts and Australian Dennis.
