The Metamorphosis - Franz Kafka
The story is by far the best-known work of Franz Kafka. It is a short reading, divided into only three chapters, but full of meaning. The language is simple, fluid, almost light and contrasts with the harshness and difficulty of the theme. It strikes the hermeticism, typical of the Kafkaesque world, and the dull, terrifying and blind representation of himself. The story tells of the difficulties of communication with the family and the loneliness of man. Even more than Gregor, it is the family itself that is affected by this mutation. And it is the family that relegates him to his cramped little room, far from all eyes.
It seems to tell us that even the dearest and closest people are not able to love unconditionally. Even the sister, who is initially the only one who can bear his presence, soon gets tired of this situation and proposes to her parents to eliminate it. That despicable, slimy, abject being, cause of shame for all of them, is not Gregor. He no longer deserves to be called by name. Gregor does not deserve any attention: he is a cockroach. Metamorphosis is a magnificent allegory of humanity and a precious jewel of literature.
