The great Gatsby
The young Nick Carraway moved to New York in the summer of 1922 and rented a house in the prestigious and dreamy Long Island, inhabited by many rich people who are the mirror of their brilliant but unsatisfied society, where the world of alcohol smugglers is confused with that of bankers and stars. A neighbour draws Nick's attention, the mysterious Jay Gatsby. Gatsby lives in a big, flashy house, and every Saturday night from a party. The man, who will turn out to be an enriched ex-gangster, lives, despite his well-being and power, in desperate inner loneliness caused by his desire for Daisy: Nick's cousin his first love.
The great Gatsby (1925) is the third novel by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and in the opinion of many his best work. The novel is about love, ambition and success and at the same time speaks of disillusionment, cruelty and the end of youthful dreams. It is the novel that brings Fitzgerald into the pantheon of world literature. Four films and a marvellous play entitled Gatz were made from it. It is a novel loved by critics, writers and readers all over the world.
