Cinque Terre, the poetry of the sea: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Cinque Terre, the poetry of the sea of the places dear to Montale, wine and the via dell'Amore Monterosso is the capital. Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore the other “clods”, imbued with a dry pride. These are the Cinque Terre, Riviera di Levante, worthy of an immortal song, according to Petrarch. About ten kilometres between Punta del Mesco and Portovenere.
It is a magical area of about twenty kilometres that starts from the east, from Riomaggiore to Manarola, from Corniglia to Vernazza and Monterosso, and this is the land that produces the famous white wine that takes its name from the region. These people have erected dry stone walls, built stone on stone, to create a small flat space to stop landslides and put their rows or low pergolas. Fields cultivated with difficulty to defend themselves from the libeccio and to get the most out of the stony ground.
