Freud is a crime thriller inspired by the pillar of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. The TV series is set in late 19th century Vienna. Sigmund Freud is an ambitious young neurologist fascinated by hypnotherapy, a practice he learned during a stay in France under the guidance of Dr Jean-Martin Charcot (a fervent supporter of the psychic nature of hysteria). Back in Austria, Sigmund will begin to apply hypnosis to the clinical cases in the psychiatric hospital run by the highly respected Theodor Meynert. His innovative theories suffer the scepticism of the director and his colleagues, first and foremost Leopold von Schönfeld. Sigmund heedless of criticism begins to apply these innovative theories to his patients, albeit with poor results.

After a failed presentation of the hypnotic method, Sigmund was convinced by his friend and colleague Arthur Schnitzler to attend a party organised by Countess Sophia von Szápáry under the pretext of expanding the circle of influential acquaintances. During the feast, the Countess and her husband, Viktor von Szápáry, will stage a soiree session revolving around the figure of the sensual and fascinating Hungarian medium Fleur Salomé. The woman, after her séance, asks Freud to help her give meaning to some dreams that are haunting her. Sigmund, accepting to help the medium, will find himself catapulted into a spiral of murders, conspiracies, revenge and supernatural events that he will have to solve by resorting to his new knowledge and the help of the housekeeper Leonore and the war veteran Alfred Kiss.
