Kilimanjaro

With its 5,895 meters above sea level, and a diameter of 40 km, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and a geological wonder: the highest free-standing mountain in the world created, shaped and wounded by the forces of fire and ice. Kilimanjaro is actually a volcano, with three craters: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira.

The origin of the name is not precisely confirmed, but the possible meaning from the language of the Chagga tribe is "the one that is impossible for a bird", and from Swahili, the most widespread language of Tanzania, the possible meanings are "Mountain of sublimity" or "White Mountain". The tribes burying their dead turned their faces to Kiba.

Kibo is the best preserved crater on the mountain, whose southern lip is slightly higher than the rest of the edge and whose highest point is the top of Uhuru, also the goal of this expedition. Kibo is the only one constantly covered with snow, and the only one that really looks like a volcano: it contains as many as three concentric craters, of which the middle one, Reusch crater, shows signs of volcanic activity, including fumaroles (sulfur dioxide emissions).
