★Just as climate change is a global problem for the people of the world, plastic pollution is now a global problem. The way each country dumps its own used plastics unplannedly, the plastics are flowing through canals, beels, rivers and canals and at some point they are going to the sea. Thus, for a long time now, plastics have gone into the sea and today it has emerged as a global problem.
★Some countries are trying to recycle plastics. Some similar efforts are going on in Bangladesh as well. The plastics used in it are not going to the canals but to the recycling factories. In that we are surviving from great danger. We have already done a little research on some of the plastic recycling activities in Chittagong City Corporation. I hope to write something about it later.
★But I want to say something about how microplastics are endangering the world. Microplastics are small plastic particles about 2 to 5 micrometers in size. One micrometer is one millionth of a meter. That means you can understand how small microplastic particles are.
★When plastics fall into the ocean, seawater breaks them down for a long time and at one stage they are transformed into small particles. These particles then easily find their way into the stomachs of aquatic animals, and gradually enter the food chain. We know that the main source of table salt is the sea or ocean. This microplastic has also taken its place in that salt. Dangerous presence of microplastics has also been found in many developed world salts. A study in Bangladesh also found that per kg of refined salt contains 800 to 900 microplastics. More than unrefined salt can be found. That means we also eat microplastics while eating salt. Terrible thing.
★We are using microplastics in various ways knowingly or unknowingly. Not just through salt, but in many ways. I will write more about this in the next version of this article.
