Romance is as genre than is largely consumed within the writing industry. There’s a lot to be said about romance, everybody wants to find that one person, everybody wants to believe in the aspect of love despite the person’s age, gender, sexual preference and even culture.

So it’s not a shocker when you find out that this popular Genre had a large amount of Pet Peeves that go beyond the line and become a little bit repetitive. This article focuses on some of the pet peeves found within the romance here with a sub category in fantasy and adventure this is also a 100% Biased opinion and are all my opinions.

Love Me Fast.

I think most people in the real world find it extremely weird when you meet a person for the first time and in that hour he or she tells you how much he or she loves and adores you. Correct me if I’m wrong but that usually sends red flags the size of a tank to me. With this in mind, it is in every way possible the same in romance books and a key sign that shows that the author is a novice or extremely obsessed with boyband fanfiction. Insta-romances is what it’s called. So instead of writing down the I love you part in the first or senco9n chapter try and emphasize the protagonist’s attraction to the love interest in any way, use a cute meet, anything g other than insta-romances, leave it to Jane Austin and the classics.

Mind Altering Love Scenes.

To be honest I doubt anybody’s first kiss of time was so magical that the earth stopped birds sang flowers fell your heart bit stopped you skin felt like hot burning magma and he or she subdued you with their light and the animal in you came out. No. If you are trying to write Erotica Then By all means please feel free to use everything that I have stated above but if it’s a teen romance adventure romance and has nothing to do with the omega verse, Spiritual and Erotica then stop! Don’t use it. You will lose your audience make it smooth memorable and express a real point of view experience but with fluff just a little bit of fluff doesn’t overdo it.

If your characters fall in love because of a kiss or a one night stand then there’s something wrong, a kiss or love scene should be used to cement the emotions not necessarily create love out of thin air.

Love Triangles Done Wrong.

In my honest opinion I hate love triangles, I can’t stand them but there is a good way of doing them and a completely awful way to do them too. I fully understand that it is possible to find yourself attracted or in love with two people at a single time, we are humans and we feel what we feel, but it is unacceptable for you to make the poor people battle for your affection for lord knows how long only to play dumb. In my opinion this is to manipulative and makes a character look well. Dumb. Unapologetically dumb and dense and selfish and oversexualized.

Again I did say that there is a good way of doing this when the main character is oblivious to what’s going on around her or him and the love interests within the triangle are subtly battling it out for her approval. This can also be used amazingly and there are so many plot devices you can use with this type of triangle, if you even want to you can create two meet cutes!

Excessive Description of the Human Anatomy.

Again when it comes to Erotica and the Omega verse by all means, type away and explain to use how his abs are perfect like a Greek god, how lead and toned he is, or how his back or chest or neck or any butt makes the sun shine brighter blah blah blah (same to the female characters and breasts) but when it comes to teen romance, urban romance, fantasy, science fiction etc. then you might want to dial it down a bit if it’s not a sexual scene then we don’t need to constantly be reading about his or her body and how delicious it is.

Let me start by saying no human is perfect. I know you thing that your husband boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, daughter or son is the most perfect person in the world but so do over 4 billion people out here in the world. A character’s body does not necessarily mean he or she is the ideal person. Sure you can write it once in a while but keep it emotional, like from the eyes of the Protagonist. The emotion conveyed aids the reader to understand what the connection is like.

The Beautiful Ugly Duckling.

Again would people stop writing these sort of things. Gone are the Days of Princess Diaries where the girl has braces shaggy hair and Glasses but turns into a princess with a simple makeover. Are you kidding? I get that it’s a popular trope and makes people feel like they have a chance to date Harry Styles one day and meet Oprah (Ops Thing I got into my feelings there) but life Does not work that way at all. If the Protagonist love interest immediately falls in love with the Protagonist when they have a makeover, then The Love Interest is a Complete Douchebag who is vain and shallow. You also find that the ugly duckling is painfully insecure, I get that you want to show the Protagonist if Humble but Insecurities are not Humble, they are demons that needs to be tamed or killed before they take over your life.

Abusive Love.

For the Omega verse you can do whatever you want but Let’s face it who in their right mind in real life would date a guy or girl who looks for any chance possible to break you down with words and bully you, how many people in real life fall in love with their bullies? Yap, that’s exactly why this trope isn’t really health. Don’t confuse this with the falling in love with a villain trope because this is totally different. This is about physical, mental and emotional torture turning into love and attraction. (Doesn’t make any sense)

We also Have the I love my Kidnapper Syndrome, or it’s science name Stockholm Syndrome (No not the One Direction song…. Actually sort of like that) Now don’t get me wrong (I feel Like I’m saying this a lot) this trope isn’t necessarily toxic I mean I get where they come from, if the kidnapper was not physically, emotionally or mentally abusive and just simply bind you to a room can be an attractive trope for the BDSM community.
