Women's liberation and change of sexual norms
In the world of economics, we look at everything from the angle of benefits and costs. If the benefit exceeds the cost, the demand for the commodity will increase, but if the cost is higher than the benefit, then the demand for this commodity will decrease.
Perhaps you will notice with me that shift in the relationship between a man and a woman, so that the meetings (dating) became easier and the relations became more, for example, the Eastern society no longer deplores the going out or the conversation of a young man with a girl, and sexual relations outside marriage have spread in the West.
On the side of benefits, from economic analysis, the benefit from sex is still the same from ancient times, and it is the fulfillment of a deep biological desire, pleasure and a feeling of contentment.
On the cost side, which deserves greater focus, the costs of sexual activity have fallen dramatically over the past century:
Sex has become safer. Fear of disease has declined for several reasons, one of which was the discovery of penicillin for the inexpensive treatment of syphilis, and treatments for other sexually transmitted diseases experienced a huge progressive leap, and even with AIDS, it was avoided by many means...
This is in addition to legalizing abortion in many regions in Europe, and leniency with it in other places, which facilitated the cost of unwanted births.
The changing role of women in society, especially with the rise of the service economy, with the availability of less physical jobs, along with the invention of household appliances that severely reduced the amount of domestic work, has greatly increased the opportunities for women to work outside the home. This, of course, supported the increasing financial independence of the woman, and consequently, her gains from the benefit of marriage decreased, in which the husband represents a source of sustenance and then control. Not only that, and with the woman’s work, the opportunity costs of childbearing increased, so she must leave her work and financial independence and superiority in many places, and sacrifice With her income, which now exceeds the incomes of men, the more women's income increases, leaving work for women, the less. In addition, with the staggering drop in infant mortality, it is no longer necessary for her to be pregnant almost continuously to ensure that a reasonable number of her children survived to adulthood.
The end result was a decline in the marriage rate and a delay in the average age of marriage.
