Low literacy level awaits to students who had prioritized victory on online games over their studies, as it contributes great distraction on school works and on other aspects. The problem needs an immediate action to discourage them from playing especially that the youth nowadays are easily swallowed with the trends without considering its negative effects.
The advent of technology made things easier and more convenient compared to past decades, yet currently, this becomes part of the disadvantageous factors to students. Based on the statistics gathered on school year 2019-2020, 4 out of 10 students are online gamers. It includes the most played and popular online game, Mobile Legend (ML), Counter Strike SG, DOTA 2, PUBG, League of Legends, Rules of Survival, and many others.
The amusing games turned some students into addiction that mostly can’t stop on having fun with it regardless on the money that they’ve spent especially that it requires internet access. From an interview, one of the online gamer said “I spent P50.00 for three days just to play Mobile Legends. I don’t think if I could end a day without it.” Instead of budgeting it for important purposes such as on school payments, they consumed money for impractical reasons.
Aside from that, the increasing prevalence of using online games among students may lead to negative impact to their health. Considering that online games give more entertainment to students than watching television, because they are engage in more active and exciting involvement wherein they invest more time with this activity.
According to the study in 2018 of the World Health Organization (WHO), they drafted 11th Revision of the ICD-11 that denotes the disorder as pattern of digital-gaming or video-gaming behavior characterized by impaired control over gaming activity to the extent that gaming takes precedence over interest and daily activities. Gaming disorders can also be linked with anxiety, depression, obesity, sleeping disorder or stress, seizure, eye irritation and musculoskeletal problem that if they took long period of gaming they are at high risk of those.
Online games can have great impacts to student’s academic performance as well. Instead of focusing on their studies, online games gave them reasons to spare more time on it than doing their homeworks, projects and other school matters.
Games entertain us specially when winning is what we aim for, but too much of playing online games leads us to lose on our grades, health and others. Although it renders enjoyment, still we must set limitations particularly students who must prioritize their studies. Play it but not to the extent that it will lead you to fail and suffer after all your wins.
