Expected benefits in joining fraternities/gangs turned out into a membership with disadvantages in many aspects as some students in Abuyog National High School who have been involved with this were plunged on its negative effects. The threatening issue on the comeback of the fraternities/gangs worried the school particularly the parents which strongly needs immediate actions in restraining its effects.

One of its effects is the danger brought by brotherhood wherein one’s enemy becomes the enemy of the group. Students are joining in this organization without thinking about the possibilities of being engaged on violence and misconduct.

In an interview from a of Junior High School student who’s a member of a fraternity, “I willingly joined fraternity because I don’t want to be bullied anymore. I have backups now who would fight for me against my enemies.”

Furthermore, being involved in such organizations may put them at risk especially that they are still teenagers. There were even fraternities who are not following the laws regarding this issue. They may experience abusive application of hazing towards their members during initiations.

“The Atlantic” reported that most fraternities have stringent, but largely unenforced, alcohol policies in place. The vast majority of fraternity-related injuries, assaults and other incidents involved violations of alcohol policies, which effectively provide liability protection for the fraternities while placing the individual members outside the coverage.

Though there has been the Anti-hazing Act of 2001, there are still groups who are not following the law. A Grade-9 student was even caught with bruises on her legs after having been paddled during their initiation.

Students use to participate in this organization without the consent from their parents. Their immature minds didn’t even think that this may only bring them at risk; they fail to see the other side.

According to the School’s Prefect of Discipline, there were 31 students who were members of fraternities and out of 31, 21 are from Junior High and 10 were from the Senior High School.

Fraternities/Gangs do not bring anything good to students. Some were expelled, have poor academic performance, suffered from abusive initiations and even met their untimely deaths.

Thus, the fraternity/gang systems must not merely create group but must understand the laws regarding this concern for them to prevent the possibilities. It may render benefits to members, but think about the probabilities. Once a member, you are bound to help each other, but not all the time it helps. Instead of joining fraternity/gang , focus on studies and be of help to school and community.
