Deficient education is approaching in the Philippines as the Department of Education expressed its support to no homework pending bills proposed by House Deputy Speaker Evelina Escudero and Quezon City Representative Alfred Vargas. House Bill No. 3611 and No. 3883 may intend to provide quality time in home to the students but still there is no assurance that this will be realized and the role of assignment/homework is essential in developing life-long learners.
Imagine students without homework, there’s no assurance that they would use that time on hanging out with their family or on resting. Gadgets nowadays are quite distractive, possibly they would only consume that time on playing with it. Based on the statistics and figures that factored into UNICEF’s The State of the World’s Children 2017, 85% of all children they surveyed are using mobile phones to access internet and Philippines has the highest proportion of children who use tablets, at 76%. If bills would be implemented teachers and students will only suffer.
Homework is a task given to students that are answered at home and in teacher’s Daily Lesson Plan (DLP), homework is included. Knowing that lesson plan is the road map for a lesson, it simply means that assignment or homework is very essential for learner’s development. It serves as a follow-up activity for the student to master the skill or to study in advance the lesson.
Other than that, time is very much needed to finish some competencies. In schools, one hour is allotted for one subject every day. However, it is undeniable that there are really subjects which need sufficient time to complete competencies. Through homeworks, additional time could help in subjects such as Practical Research, Mathematics, and many others.
Homework is a vital part of education, it was proven that it helps to reinforce learning and develop good study habits and life skills. We can’t hide the fact that there are students who deeply understand lessons if given only an ample time for their comprehension. Through take home activities, students would probably continue on learning more. If bills seek to eliminate homeworks to spare time with their family, homeworks could also be the time of bonding. They could not just enhance their knowledge but they could have that quality time at home.
Apart from the intellectual purposes of giving assignment, discipline and sense of responsibility are also part of its benefits knowing that a student could learn or apply time management on the school works given to them by their teachers. If they are determined to have balanced time at home and at school, they would surely set things orderly and would manage their time. The training of being a student would impart ethical conducts that are very imperative on their daily lives and on their workplaces someday.
DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones and the said lawmakers are only concern on the students’ social aspect. Plans must contain general bases involving the what if’s and results. Assignment may be a burden and a time consuming task but its effect is favorable to the students. It is a continuation of their leanings, a reinforcement of study habits and an influence on possessing a responsible attitude. As part of learning, homeworks must remain because in the first place these are intended for student’s development. With this, it is ensured that time is not wasted, it’s worthy instead.
