There are some professions in Bengali society which are sufficient for living and making a living but their evaluation is insufficient for the people. Cultivation is such a profession. Panchasis are called 'Panate'. However, the use of this word may be slightly different depending on the place, time and language. The long stem of the betel tree grows on a solid substance. Bamboo, cane, weed canopies are sometimes cultivated in houses covered with cashew trees. The vita or land on which betel is cultivated is called betel waste. To the farmer the drink is known as ‘money tree’.
In Pabna's Atgharia Upazila, many marginal farmers, whose land holdings are very small, have become self-sufficient by scattering a drink on their meager land. He is providing money to educate his children with the money earned from drinking waste. In Suryapara village, the fortunes of many have changed due to drinking water grown on only ten kathas of land. They have bought land with the money earned from their waste and are even building pucca houses.
In addition to economic value, drinking has a variety of social traditions. In all the festivals and ceremonies of Bangladesh such as marriage, circumcision of Sunnah, Annaprasan, etc., it is a must to drink with all the valuable food items. Not just ceremonies, many people sit at home three or four times a day to decorate the drink. In many cases, the scene of drinking creates a pleasant atmosphere.
Panchasis have made an outstanding contribution to the economic and cultural development of Bangladesh. In silence, they are just working as vigilant watchdogs for the economic development of the country.
