How imaginary competitions can help you achieve your goals
Week Highlights #2
This is the second episode of the “week highlights” series. This is the first one if you want to take a look at it.
This week I was thinking about motivation.
Motivation is really important for me because it helps me achieve things by having fun. I’m a very competitive person, so it’s easy for me to take motivation from competitions. Sometimes this competition doesn’t exist: I just set them in my mind. The other part doesn’t even know that I’m competing with him. But that’s fine because the goal isn’t to win a price but to become better in the process. And if these “imaginary competitions” help me, why not!
But I’m always on the edge to go from “helping me” to “killing my self-esteem”. It is not easy to set the right boundaries. Sometimes I compete with people that have too much advantage over me. Trying to win a 100-meter run with Usain Bolt when this is the first time you put your gym shoes on doesn’t motivate you, it makes you give up.
To stay motivated it’s important to set little steps.
Yesterday I went on a hike and when my friend show me, from the bottom, where we would go, it felt impossible. I remember me thought: “there’s no way we can walk all the way up there”.
A few hours later, we were on the top of the mountain.
So I noticed that looking to your target can feel overwhelming, but if you just look for the next step, you will be where you want to be before you realize it.
That’s the reason for these imaginary competitions. But you should be aware to take one that it’s neither too difficult nor too easy: just a little bit above your competence.
How do you motivate yourself?
What I enjoyed this week
Book summary — I read a book on Blinkist, The expectation effect, by David Robson, which talks about the power of our mindset. If we are convinced that we will die, we will. If we believe that we will heal, we will. The brain will make the body produce hormones accordingly to what we believe in, and these substances will help us, or kill us... it’s our choice! That’s incredible!
Exercise — I reached my limit this week and I learned that I should not underestimate kilometers on a bike just because I ride on flat terrain.
Article: I really like my series on passive income. It’s incredibly fun to write, even if it took a lot of time. This week we are on episode 2!
