The 4 New Technologies in Formula One

Any fan of the motorsport world will understand that there are new technologies in Formula One for the 2022 season. FIA planned it long ago as a way to revolutionize the competition. It is not a secret that the competitiveness of the Formula One World Championship was not too good in the turbo-hybrid era. Mercedes dominated the competition, with only Max Verstappen to win the Driver’s Championship outside the legendary team. It will not be the same starting from the 2022 season.

The first major update is the aerodynamics technology in F1. This kind of thing is a crucial part of the field. It is the thing that keeps the car on the surface of the circuit regardless of the tremendous speed it boasts. For the new season, it returns to the so-called ground effect that was abandoned in 1982. Moreover, the styling of the body is altered to promote closer racing between the drivers. So far, the result is there to enjoy in the opening race of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The second thing that the new season of F1 delivers is a greener fuel technology. The current cars on the grid will run on E10 fuel. It signifies that 10 percent of the fuel comes from ethanol. It is a small but necessary move to alter the juice for F1cars in the future. Of course, it comes with a bit of horsepower loss. Yet, it is a necessary thing to do for the sustainability matter of the competition. More importantly, there is already Formula E that uses the power of electricity as an example for F1.

The third one of the new technologies in Formula One for the 2022 season is the so-called show and tell session. Fundamentally, it is a specific session where teams need to describe and explain the modifications or alterations in their cars. It aims to prevent a particular group from gaining an advantage over other teams. A well-known example of this kind of thing was the so-called double diffuser of the Brawn GP team in 2009. The team took advantage of that for more than half of the season.

Lastly, it is now possible to incorporate plants as the materials in constructing an F1 car. Believe it or not, the seat of the McLaren car of Lando Norris has been made of reinforced flax fibers since Silverstone 2021. Other materials include linen, bamboo, cotton, hemp, and flax are also available. Of course, it is a way to bring more of the natural elements to the new technologies in Formula One. Without a doubt, more teams may incorporate this kind of thing in the future.

Inevitably, new technologies will always be there in the motorsport world one after another. Some of them may last longer, while others may not be around anymore. Yet, they aim the same thing which is to promote a better quality of the competition. The variety of new technologies in Formula One for the 2022 season is beneficial for many people, indeed.
