Brushless DC motors, often referred to as BLDC motors, consist of a permanent magnet rotor and polyphase armature stator windings. A BLDC motor differs from a traditional direct current motor because it does not have brushes. Instead commutation is conducted electronically, with the stator windings supplied by an electronic drive.

A brushless motor can be constructed in one of two configurations; either with a rotor on the exterior of the core and the windings on the inside, or with the windings outside of the core. The rotor magnets function as insulators in the first arrangement, reducing the rate of heat dissipation from the motor and allowing it to run at a low current. Such a configuration is commonly found in consumer products such as fans. The second configuration dissipates less heat but increases torque power, and can be found in consumer products such as hard disc drives.

Brushless DC motors are controlled by an electronic drive that alternates the supply voltage in between stator windings as the rotor rotates. The rotor position is tracked by a transducer (which is either optical or magnetic in nature), which transmits data to the electronic controller, and the specific stator winding that’s supplied with power is dictated by its position.
