Today, a mountain is usually defined as a peak at least 2,000 feet or 610 meters high in the United Kingdom and Ireland, when a mountain is officially finalized by the UK government. Elevation 600 meters (1,989 feet). [9] Some definitions require a spatial significance, typically 100 feet (30.5 m) or 500 feet (152.4 m). [6] In practice, the mountains of Scotland are often referred to as "hills", where the height of the hills does not matter, as reflected in the names of the Quilin Mountains and the Tordanda Mountains. In Wales, the difference between hills and mountains is considered with land use and the size and further height of the hills. For some time, the United States was considered a mountain 1,000 feet (304.6 m) or more. Any less elevated land than this height was considered a hill. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has, however, added to this term that the terms do not have a technical definition in the United States. [10]

Historical significance

Most of the settlements were originally built in the hills, they can prevent or control floods, especially if the settlement is near a large water reservoir or for protection, the surrounding lands from the hills can be well monitored and fight against invaders is easy. Ancient Rome, for example, was built on seven hills, which protected Rome from invaders.

In northern Europe, many ancient monuments are housed in hops. Some of these are made up of conservative structures (such as Iron Age mountain thorns), but others are less important. In Britain, many churches on mountain tops are believed to have been built on earlier pagan sacred sites. The National Cathedral in Washington, DC followed this tradition and was built on the highest hill in that city.
