A young man was killed in a scuffle with the staff of a drug rehabilitation center at Rupatali in Barisal city. The incident took place in the area adjacent to the radio station in Rupatali on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Sumon Khan, 30. He is the son of the late Chhattar Khan of Khan Bari in Rupatali radio station area. Police have detained five people from the Dream Life drug treatment center for questioning. Relatives claim Sumon has been killed. Confirming the incident, SI Firoz Al Mamun of Barisal Kotwali Model Police Station said, "Immediately after the incident, we went to the house of the deceased and detained five people from Dream Life Drug Treatment Center for questioning." The arrested are Md. Bappi Sikder (38), Md. Raihan (20), Md. Rabbi (20), Ujjal Samaddar (30) and Md. Bayezid (22). Among them Md. Bappi Sikder was the director of Dream Life Drug Treatment Center and Md. Raihan and Md. Rabbi were working as volunteer members in the center. The other two Ujjal Samaddar and Md. Bayezid are old patients of the same center. According to local sources, the deceased Sumon was a drug addict. Family members were often beaten for drug money. Exasperated by Sumon's torture, the family members informed the staff of the drug rehabilitation center and they wanted to take Sumon away by force. But when Sumon did not want to go, the staff of the center got up on Sumon's chest and tied his hands and feet. When Sumon lost consciousness on the spot, when he tried to get in the car, Sumon fell to his death. Shebachim was later taken to the hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Meanwhile, Sumon's mother Khadija Begum said that the deceased Sumon had some mental problems. He used to beat me and my relatives on various occasions. For this reason, he was kept in the Dream Life drug treatment center for six months. Then he was at home for the last month and a half. Sumon also beat me last night on various pretexts. When Sumon's other two brothers Sultan and Rumman were informed about the matter, they again informed Dream Life Center. 7/8 people came from the center on Wednesday afternoon to take Sumon. Mother Khadija Begum claimed that the members of the drug rehabilitation center were about to take Sumon away without informing the family. At one stage, the youths vandalized the furniture of the house in a scuffle. Then he threw Sumon out of the house and threw him on the ground. Then 3/4 young men got up on his back and grabbed him and asked his relatives for towels and ropes to stop Sumon. Later Sumon fainted. At one stage, Sumon was picked up in an auto and his death was confirmed. When the locals came to know about the incident, they arrested four people from the drug rehabilitation center. At the same time, the owner of the company Bappi came to the spot and the locals chased and arrested him. He was later handed over to Kotwali police. Asma, Jhuma and Nazma, sisters of the deceased, have demanded exemplary punishment for the murder. Witness Bakul Begum, a relative of the deceased, said that Sumon was beaten naked. Jewel, the cousin of the deceased, said that they did not treat Sumon tactfully to take him to the treatment center. Rather, Sumon has been treated the way animals are sacrificed. Barisal Kotwali Model Police Station OC Investigation AR Mukul said the family of the deceased had verbally complained against the staff of the Rehab Center. Besides, information about the matter is being taken from the locals. The whole matter is being investigated. Five people from the rehab center have been taken into police custody for questioning and the bodies have been sent to Shebachim morgue for autopsy to find out the cause of death.
