According to the Global Peace Index, compiled by The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Iceland has been the world's most peaceful country for the past 10 years. Not only that, Iceland is a country with less military power than the top 4 countries in the list. The other top countries on the list are New Zealand, Austria, Portugal and Denmark.
The Institute for Economics and Peace compiles a list of 163 independent countries, home to 99.7 percent of the world's population. The list is based on 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators under three criteria.
Those three criteria include social security, the country's current national and international conflict, and the state of military power. This year, 92 countries have deteriorated and only 72 have improved. However, since 2007, Iceland has held the first position.
Which is why Iceland tops the list of peaceful countries
In order to review how peaceful a country is, one has to look at the situation in every field of that country, such as social, economic, political, religious and so on.
1. No classification
There is no difference between rich and poor in Iceland. 97% of the citizens there call themselves middle class. That means there is no financial instability among them. They send their children to the same type of school and lead a very ordinary life. Again, there is no tension between them on any religious issue. Most of the people in that country believe in Evangelical Lutheran. Eighty percent of the people are part or followers of the Lutheran State Church. There are also about 10,000 Muslims in Iceland. There are also people of other religions here.
2. Gender inequality
According to the World Economic Forum for Gender Equality, Iceland has been ranked number one in terms of gender equality for seven consecutive years. In a list of 144 countries, this small country has been able to strengthen the position of women in education and politics. About 66% of women in the country are educated in higher education.
In fact, the situation is quite different compared to other countries. This is because the participation of women in higher education in Iceland is higher than that of men. Of the 62 seats in parliament, 30 are held by women, or 48 percent. In addition, 80 percent of the country's women are involved in various workplaces. Compulsory paternity and maternity leave are granted to ensure the position of both spouses in the family. In 1980, Vigdis Finnbogadotti became the first woman president in the history of the world, not just Iceland.
3. No army or police is needed
Iceland is located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. That is, it is surrounded by the sea. The population is only around three lakh 34 thousand and everyone is very peaceful. This country is also quite neutral politically.
So it does not take much trouble for their safety. However, they still maintain a small coastal force with 300-400 troops, 4 warplanes and 3 patrol vessels.
They have also signed up as members of NATO for security. They also have an agreement with the United States. According to which, the United States will never attack Iceland. This is how the country has been in the 74 years since independence in 1944 and no one has tried to change this situation.
Icelandic police generally do not use guns, pistols or any such firearms, although they are taught to wield them during training. Ordinary people there cannot buy or keep any weapon if they want to and there is no opportunity to buy it illegally. Another issue is the type of training for Icelandic police.
The US police force is given 19 weeks of training, with 3 years of compulsory training in Iceland. Paul Hirsfield, an assistant professor of sociology at Rutgers University, said: "If you were given 19 weeks of training, you would only learn to focus on something important. Sadly, training in the U.S. police force will only teach you to ensure your own safety. Will help you learn how to save yourself.
