The longest lake in the south of Europe flows near the village of the Alps. The lake is bordered on one side by the Alps and on the other by a vast expanse of Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Lindau, a small island, stands in the middle of the vast expanse of water east of this Constance Lake. The island is located in the German state of Bavaria.
Unknown history of the island
In 882 AD, a St. Gallen priest first mentioned Lindau in one of his writings. The Romans first settled on the island in the first century. The oldest church on the island, St. Stephen's Church, was founded in 1180. The first monastery was established on the island in 1224. In 1275-76, Emperor Rudolph I proclaimed Lindau the Imperial Free City. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 1802, Lindau lost his status.
During this time Lindau came under the Austrian state. France occupied the island after World War II. After many ups and downs and power shifts, Lindau reunited with the German state of Bavaria in 1955.
Lindau is brilliant in its beauty and uniqueness
Each island has its own characteristics and beauty. The same is true of Lindau Island. Although small, it is quite neat and attractive. The small island of 3,400 hectares has a population of about 25,000. On one side of the island, on the shores of Lake Constance, stands a huge statue of a lion, like a silent guard. This lion is one of the symbols of Bavaria. It is one of the creations of the famous sculptor Johann von Halbig. On the other side of the island stands a 33-meter high lighthouse that has witnessed thousands of histories. It was built between 1853-56. It is the only lighthouse in the Bavarian region.
You can buy a ticket and go up to the lighthouse. The view from the lake and the view from the lighthouse is incomparable. The Powder Tower, built in 1508 on the western tip of the island, was once used as a defense tower. Until the eighteenth century, the fort had a stockpile of ammunition used for defense.
The fort was opened to the public in the 19th century. At present the fort is rented out for meetings and various social events. Another place of interest on the island is the Magnum Tower. The 20-meter-long fort, built in the 12th century, is a unique example of the Middle Ages.
New Harbor Port, the century-old port of Lindau, is one of the major attractions here. The port was established in 1853. And with it the railway bridge was built. There is a beautiful walking path by the lake, which can be reached from a long distance.
An island bright with fountains of light
In Europe, there is always a cloud-sun game. Anagona of clouds can be seen after a few moments of the bright morning. This sun, this rain. It is almost impossible to predict when the weather will change. Even then the weather on this island is quite enjoyable. As soon as the sun went down and the evening came down, the light of the harbor shone. Then a fountain of light started running around. The trees, the flowers, the water of the sea and the sky all became like drunks in a festival. The light also touches the walls of the carefully renovated ancient building.
A city of ancient heritage
The city, centered on Lindau Island, is quite ancient and traditional. Roads made of Roman stone. Houses, churches, museums and parks with gardens on either side of the road. There is a fair of flowers of different colors. The most interesting part of the island is the Old Town Hall. The site carries ancient Roman traditions and architecture from the fifteenth century. Long Roman-era narrow brick roads, with many historic buildings on either side of the road, most of which are carefully preserved.
These include Pulverterm and Diabstorm, which were part of the city wall of ancient Lindau. Walking along the path you can see several old churches. After a while you will see small parks. There are flowers of different colors. The parks are abuzz with the noise of children. The chirping of birds may come from afar. The city seems to have a calm and beautiful clean environment all the time.
A city of cultural heritage
Another interesting part of the island is the Lindau City Museum. There is an amazing collection of all the wonderful sculptures and paintings of different times. Another attraction of the museum is the variety of furniture. The various floors of the museum are decorated with various styles of furniture from the Gothic period to the Baroque period. It gives an idea of the tastes and financial capabilities of the affluent class living in the region in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The museum is also full of various things. There are a variety of antiques made of silver, bronze, copper, brass and tin, as well as a variety of fancy items made of glass and ceramics, such as various old-fashioned toys. Exhibitions of paintings are organized here at different times. This culturally heritage town has the Lindau Theater Hall. Various local cultural groups regularly organize various cultural events here. The Lindau Puppet Opera here has gained widespread fame outside the region as well.
Bikini special market every week
One day a week on the island, especially on Saturdays, there is a special market like in our countryside. Many people from distant villages and suburbs come to the market with locally produced items. They are waiting for the customers by arranging their own posara. Fresh fruits and vegetables from their own vegetable garden and vegetables, eggs, butter, cheese and much more! Some brought their own hand-knitted scarves, sweaters, hats and various clothes. This market is the lifeblood of the residents.
Constant lake of unparalleled splendor that surrounds the island
A golden opportunity for tourists visiting Lindau Island to enjoy the boundless beauty of Constance Lake. Constance Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in Europe, with a length of 540 square kilometers. The lake was born from the Rhine Glacier during the Ice Age many centuries ago. It flows across a huge stretch of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
The lake covers 73 km from Germany, 28 km from Austria and 72 km from Switzerland. The water of this 14 km wide lake fills the shortage of drinking water in many cities in southern Germany. The locals call it Swabiensi. The three parts of the lake have three different names. The upper part is called Obersi or Upper Lake, and the lower part is Untersi or Lower Lake. These two are joined by the Rhine, whose name is Searhin.
Every year a large number of tourists come to this lake by boat. Lindau Island is located east of Constance Lake. Most of the tourists choose this island for boating in Constance Lake as the communication system of the island is good and there are facilities for tourists. As a result, many tourists flock to Lindau Island every year to see the immense richness of the island along with the boat trip to the lake.
