“Yesterday” Film Review: A Quite Touching Documentary Drama Film for Band Seventeen
The film "Yesterday" managed to present a touching story that happened to the Seventeen band, victims of the 2018 Banten tsunami. Not only providing a dramatic spectacle, "Yesterday" also succeeded in providing a variety of authentic views on the actions of the Seventeen band in the Indonesian music industry.
Music is one of the most effective communication tools for many people. Not only contains notes and words, music can make big changes in a person's life and even the lives of many people. Each generation has close attachments and has its own type of music.
Those of us who are 24-30 years old today must have experienced the invasion of Malay pop music. The genre of music that exploded due to the close discussion of love life. One of the famous bands in that era was Seventeen. Unfortunately a thousand dear, Seventeen experienced a great shock in 2018, the band initiated by Ifan became a victim of the Tanjung Lesung Tsunami. This terrible incident then inspired the making of a documentary drama entitled "Yesterday" which was just released on March 19, 2021.
The documentary film “Yesterday” tells in depth the career journey of the band Seventeen
“Yesterday” is a documentary drama film directed by Upie Guava. The title "Yesterday" in this film is taken from one of the song titles belonging to the band Seventeen, who was also a victim of the Tanjung Lesung Tsunami, Banten in 2018. In this terrible incident, 3 Seventeen personnel, namely Herman, Bani and Andi died. Only the vocalist, Ifan Seventeen, survived.
The film "Yesterday" itself does not only tell the story of this fateful incident. More deeply, this film shows the history of the early formation of Seventeen from various angles from managers, fellow musicians, labels to former personnel. Everyone tells about Seventeen's early career in detail and authentically, making us as people who have heard their songs feel very close to the journey of this band from Yogyakarta. In short, the documentary “Yesterday” tells the story of the beginning of formation, personnel changes, song making to display footage of the recording and stage processions that Seventeen has explored.
In addition to telling a career, "Yesterday" is a film that retells the Banten tsunami incident that killed 3 Seventeen personnel in 2018 ago
For those who have followed Seventeen's career, they will definitely feel quite deep sadness when watching the movie "Yesterday". The reason is, apart from providing original footage of the Tsunami incident, this film also shows activities before the tsunami hit, even to the point of illustrating the survivors being tossed about in the middle of the sea.
What became interesting was that the perspective of the tsunami incident was increasing. Apart from the official BMKG version, we can take a closer look at the stories of the victims who survived the Tsunami in such detail that we can feel the horror of it. The most interesting story is Ifan Seventeen's attempt to stay safe by swimming in a box with four other survivors while continuing to hear terrible sounds around him. They all floated for two hours in the middle of the sea, following the current of the waves carrying them. In the midst of this life-and-death event, Ifan and 4 other people chanted salawat in the middle of the corpses that were tossed about and were lucky to make it to the mainland and immediately get help.
It could be a reflection for us not to comment excessively about the tsunami victims or other disaster victims
Another interesting thing that appears in this documentary is what happened after the incident. Denying the continuation of Seventeen, testimonies from the victims' families and prayers and stories that are no less sad than the stories when the tsunami took place.
At the end of this film we are shown sincerity, the meaning of friendship, and the purpose of this film. “Yesterday” became a very amazing documentary drama film and very worthy to be seen for Seventeen fans as well as Indonesian film and music lovers. This film can also provide a reflection for us not to talk too much about an event that we didn't experience, because there are people who are still crying over the victims of the tsunami that occurred two years ago.
