Facial masks, hand socks and other protective equipment can help prevent the spread of coronavirus under the right conditions. Many are also making and using masks at home. But are they safe?

Why isn't everyone using masks?

The World Health Organization currently says only two types of people should wear protective masks. They are:

  • Those who are sick, those who have symptoms.

  • Those who are suspected to have coronavirus, those who are caring

They are not recommending the use of masks for the general public. The reason?

  • They can become toxic when worn or opened by other people due to coughing and sneezing.

  • It is much more effective to lose hands frequently and maintain social distance.

  • One of these lies can create feelings of insecurity.

When an infected person speaks, coughs or sneezes, a very small amount of coronavirus can float in the air. They can enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth through direct contact or a toxic object.

But the World Health Organization is now trying to understand whether ordinary people also benefit from using masks. They are testing to see if they have a better idea of the virus's activity.

Does a homemade mask work?

The U.S. government has advised Americans to wear masks or cover their faces with scarves when they go out in areas affected by the coronavirus.

Residents of New York, the main epicenter of the outbreak in the United States, have already been advised.

"It could be a scarf," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday. It could be something you made at home. "

However, the United Kingdom has advised against such a move. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government was following medical and scientific advice on the use of masks.

Professor Jonathan Van Tom, England's deputy chief medical officer, said he did not believe the risk of infecting healthy people was reduced by wearing these masks.

"The most important thing now is to ensure social distance," he says.

The use of reusable cloth masks is also unhealthy and could lead to infection at home, say European experts. They say there is a good chance that the virus will pass through this cloth.

Even then, there are numerous tips online on how to make a mask at home.

But the issue of quality of homemade masks is not picked up by any review or verification. However, officially made masks have to be made according to certain criteria.

Which type of mask is best?

Different types of masks used in hospitals offer different types of protection.

The mask that provides the most protection is the FFP3 or N95 or FFP2, which have an air purifier.

Experts do not recommend the use of these masks for the public. These are only for health care workers who come in contact with patients infected with the coronavirus and are at risk of contracting the virus floating in the air.

These are doctors, nurses or health workers who live within a meter of coronavirus infected or potential patients. These workers can be hospital, primary care, ambulance or home care providers.

Other health-care workers who are at lower risk may wear surgical masks.

What else can protect against coronavirus?

The UK Department of Health recommends that gloves and other protective equipment be used in cases where the coronavirus may be exposed.

Especially health workers who are most at risk should only use all kinds of protective equipment outside of aprons, masks, gloves and goggles.

But the general public was not advised to use gloves or other protective equipment.

The UK Department of Health's recommendations for protection against coronavirus are:

  • After returning home from outside, wash your hands frequently with soap and water and for at least 20 seconds.

  • If soap and water are not available, hand sanitizer can be used.

  • When coughing or sneezing, a tissue or elbow should be used instead of a hand.

  • After coughing or sneezing, the used tissue should be thrown in the garbage box and hands should be washed.

  • If the hands are not clean, the eyes, nose and mouth cannot be touched.
