The legend of El Dorado arose from the assumption that there once was a legendary realm in South America where gold and immense wealth prevailed.

As part of a ceremonial, the body of a cacique, escorted by his tribe, was entirely coated in gold dust. The rite practiced by the Muisca Indians in Lake Guatavita, near what is now known as Boyacá in Colombia, is mentioned. It is reported that when the Europeans arrived in the new regions, they saw Guayan Indians wearing gold jewelry on their necklaces, which piqued their interest even more in finding El Dorado.
