Cancellation of Rites: For the Nation, For the People

Mounting numbers of covid19 cases spawned the abrupt rescission of classes, examinations and even graduation rites which garnered varying sentiments from the Filipino populace. As much as most schools would wish to push through this robbed opportunity, the safety of the general public, especially of the learners must be of top priority during this battle against, what the world considers, an unseen health terrorist.

Neglecting the potential detriment brought by the pandemic will only cause the figures to shoot up therefore increasing the record of possible fatalities. With the vaccine and cure yet to be discovered, practicing precautionary measures is highly imposed. The cancellation of commencement exercises might have just spared hundreds of lives from becoming victims of this health menace.

Since covid19 unfurl hastily on mass gatherings and physical interactions, proper hygiene, social distancing and home quarantine are strictly enforced to ensure the welfare of the community, and as mass celebrations are postponed, the assurance of the control over the cases’ proliferation is at high percentage.

As students voice out their dismay over the effect of the pandemic, DepEd remains sturdy with the injunction that not until the quarantine is over, graduation rites are deferred claiming that “historically, this has happened before, due to war, calamities and public situations,” and ceremonies can still be rescheduled at a later date guaranteeing that no countless hours of thriving shall go unheralded after the plight.

Nevertheless, with or without the rites, the sleepless nights of study and hard work will pay off as the journey doesn’t only end at the celebration. Currently, the world still battles with an enemy that takes on the weak, fragile and unguarded. Unless we clear our sight, take a look at how patients grasp for air and dear life while these masked men on PPEs endure bruises and the fear of being unable to salvage themselves as they save others, how the poor cry for relief and assistance, and how kins feud over funds, only then we’ll realize that sometimes it’s best to sacrifice personal gain for the benefit of the world.
