The island of dolls: an island like no other!

Whenever i ask someone about his dreams and what does he want to achieve in life, i got this answer with a sigh most of the times: "I want to travel the world, see the interesting places and have an unforgettable adventure to tell everyone about". I'm very sure your answer won't be much different either. Actually, that's a very fabulous dream to have, but what do you mean with "adventure" and "interesting places"? How about a creepy isolated island populated with cursed dolls as an interesting place to visit? and do you think hanging around with the ghost of a little girl who died under mysterious circumstances is an unforgettable adventure? If your answer is yes, then welcome to " La isla de las muñecas" in Mexico.

The direction is the channels of Xochimilio, few miles to the south of the mexican capital Mexico City. Our destination is called the island of the dolls. Judging the nature and the views around it, you will probably expect to see a beatiful island, plenty of trees, green plants, and the crystal water surfaces. Well, you won't be so sure about that after feeling the negative vibes of that place. Maybe it was once the way you described, but that's not the case anymore, and that region is now considered to be one of scariest places on earth! At the moment, you probably are wondering: What makes this island that scary? Good question. Try to imagine dolls being on almost every single tree there, staring at you, but not normal cute dolls which kids play with, instead, they are disfigured, dismembered, dirty and even burned! Worse, all of those puppets are hanged either from the neck or upside down in a sight that will give you chills. But what brought all of those dolls there and why?

Surely, like any other "haunted" place, people won't let this opportunity pass them without using their imagination to create legends and frightening stories about it. There are mainly four theories linked to " La isla de la muñecas", the first one claims that a man collected tons of dolls as an exorcism to kick out the evil spirits from the island after founding the body of a little girl who drowned there. The second story is quite the same as the first one, the only differance is that the man hanged the toys as a way to express his sadness after the death of the young girl and honor her soul after he found her doll floating on the water where she drowned. The next tale suggests that the dead girl is the daughter of a mexican man who collected dolls and put them everywhere on the island as a memorial to his late beloved kid for years until he died of sadness. want to guess how the dad died? That's right, he drowned in the same spot as his daughter! Just a miserable fortune or a suicide? nobody will ever know that.. The fourth and last urban legend, which most people consider it as the original version of the events, takes us back to 1950, and a man called Don Julian Santana Barrera, who left his wife and kids in the city and decided to live on the abanded island. Like that alone isn't strange enough, Julian said that while he was standing on the shore of a lake the first time he arrived there, his eyes were glued to the pale shadow of a girl underneath water who was wearing a white dress. This is exactly when the interesting events begins. According to Don Barrera, at the first sight, he thought the girl was dead, but seconds later, her face got close to the surface enough for the man to judge she might be still alive. Immediately, he jumped in the water trying to save her . Do you know what happened next? sorry but no... He couldn't save her, because she was neither dead nor alive! In fact, after very exhausting attempts to save the kid, he only came out with a plastic doll in his hands! Julian couldn't believe that and didn't understand how did the doll got stuck there, and most important: why it looked like a human girl? He didn't stop asking people around the island until he discovered that a girl drowned there years ago. And that's how Barrera developped an obsession with collecting dolls... Since that day, he didn't only hang the puppet he "saved" on a tree, yet he devoted his life to collect dolls and put them around the island. but the question here is: Why?? The answer, according to the same man, is to make the ghost of the girl happy and satisfied . Otherwise, she won't stop haunting him and cursing his life! Julian also talked about hearing her screams at night and feeling her footsteps close to him..

Barrera died in 2001, taking with him a lot of secrets to the grave. In fact, even the circumstances of his death are mysterious. Some people says that he suffered a deadly heart attack, yet others says the ghost drowned him in the same spot as the the girl.. Now, do you think that scary parts are over with barrera's death? definitely not! Actually, many of the visitors swore they saw the dolls moving at night and whispering to one another! Add to that many other stories like a fisherman talking about how the dolls tried to push his boat in the direction of the island as soon as he got close to it...

Nobody knows for sure what is the right exact story of that island . But the sure thing is the place gained a lot of popularity due to those legends and became a famous destination for people who likes to try some horror. So if you have the chance, will you ever try a vacation there?

Another good from you @hamedbkh. Well written and an interesting topic, but I would like to give some constructive criticism: try not to get too long paragraphs. The text mass in the middle - the paragraph starting "Surely, like any other..." is way too massive. It would need to be split up into 3 or more paragraphs.

I got your point. You are right and also that paragraph got stuck between two pictures which made it look even longer.. I will consider that next time! Thanks for your helpful criticism!

Yes long paragraphs is not good writing. First line with the main topic/purpose followed by a few supporting lines.

The dolls look scary to me too. It would be interesting to know if this is a place where tourists go. Maybe it's just a tourist attraction?

As much as I know yeah tourists can go there. It can be just a tourist attraction. But the locals says it's not and they believe that the island is cursed. So it's more like a mystery.

I enjoyed reading this one. It's hard to say what my definition of adventure is but I do not mind to hang out with a ghost.

Thanks for sharing this intriguing story. 👍
