One of the most important measures taken by many countries against bad habits such as smoking and alcohol is high tax policy and regular price increase.
My country, Turkey, is among the 7 countries that take the most stringent measures to combat these bad habits, according to the World Health Organization reports.
This means high taxes and high prices.
Yes, bad habits such as cigarettes and alcohol are not habits to be applauded or praised, they are like inviting many diseases.
But still somehow a certain part of the population uses them.
When the stress of life is added to the habit of starting at an early age, it becomes an excuse for people who already tend to continue the habit.
Nearly 28% of the population of my country regularly smokes cigarettes every day, and again, close to 22% of the population consumes alcohol.
Although we are at the forefront of European countries in cigarette consumption, we lag behind in alcohol consumption.
This means that they have not been able to prevent the emergence of cigarette smoking and new users despite the drastic measures implemented.
The applied high tax and high price application causes those who have a habit of smoking to produce new solutions.
The most common of these is to make your own cigarettes by purchasing tobacco and cigarette filters.
When the tobacconists in the market are researched, it turns out that the cost of producing your own cigarettes is 1/3 of the price of cigarettes in the market.
So, assuming that 1 pack of cigarettes costs 3 dollars, it is 1 dollar if you make it yourself.
This is proof that drastic measures against bad habits do not work very well.
Of course, it is a fact that producing your own cigarettes does not work for the leading cigarette companies.
I do not know how much say these companies have over the country's governments, but it is a fact that they will take drastic measures on tobacco use, if any.
As a matter of fact, it is a fact that tobacco producers have organized some actions in recent days due to the restrictions imposed on them.
It is a known fact that every 6 seconds, 1 person dies from smoking-related diseases in the world.
The most prominent cases are lung cancer along with cancer types.
I am not going to advise anyone to quit smoking or alcohol, but at least reduce the use of cigarettes and tobacco and help extend the time you can spend with your loved ones.
Every person is a value and every person has loved ones and needs.
Even if you don't think about yourself, don't leave them alone..!
